V
A Z (VOLGA Automobile Plant)
On
July 20th, 1966 the CPSU Central Committee and the Council of Ministers
of USSR decided for the construction of an Automobile Plant. They chose
the City of Togliatti among 40 possible places for the following reasons:
- Facility
in finding raw materials
-
Ideal geographic position (being linked to the others Russian towns
by
a railway network and to five seas by the river Volga).
The Fiat
124, elected the car of the year 1966, was chosen as the base model. The
VAZ building started in January 1967, and for the first time in URSS the
simultaneous construction drawing method was introduced. So, while the building
went on, space was given to the manufacturing of the cars with the set purpose
of reducing the estimated times.
The real production started on April 12th, 1970 and on December 21st competent
autorities permitted the factory to work at full speed. During the same
year the assembly line produced the millionth car. |

|
After
three years and a half, in 1974, the annual production reached 660.000 units,
2.230 a day. The production rates were constantly increasing, in 1984 720.000
cars had been produced; the total quantity amounted to 10.000.000 pieces.
The
LADA factory occupies an area of 6.000.000 mē of which 2.300.000 are covered
by the plants in which have been installed over 30.000 equipments and 270
Km. of assembly lines. Every day 2.500 cars are produced, that is one car
every 22 seconds. |
The
firm comprises 7 departments for the components building and assembly:
- big presses (door and side panels)
- little presses
- foundry
- engine and transmission assembling
- cars' assembling
- cutting and finishing of sheets
- the production of equipments (except for the electronic ones such
as robots and computers which are bought abroad).

Assembly
is divided in three lines where, in successive phases, all different components
are assembled on car's body that will be completed along a 2 Km. way by
500 operations. After that, cars run on the test stand rolls and they
are tested on the special layout of the Plant. Other numerous firms are
connected to LADA'S, in fact they supply the components that are not autonomously
produced.
In the Plant 180.000 people are working, the 43,2% are women. Up to today
various models, with several versions and hundreds of fittings have been
produced in accordance with the laws governing the vehicular traffic in
each different State. The 35% of production is exported to 85 countries
where the supply networks boast of 3.500 professional dealers who contributed
to LADA sales to become a great success.
Till today, the Niva off-road has been the car that distinguished the
LADA trademark in Italy; its import, which started at the end of the Seventies,
permitted to reach a considerable penetration into the market.
The "NIVA" can rightly be defined an unique automobile phenomenon: simple
but winning and functional choices in design, like permanent four-wheel
drive, reduction gear and central limited slip differential, characterise
this excellent off-road vehicle that can solve any driving problem and
any real "off-road" necessity which otherwise would be impossible for
a very great number of users.
The evolution and technical refining, which supported the development
and the increasing diffusion of this strong off-road vehicle which decidedly
looks like a street car, together with a very contained price and without
any possible competition for this kind of product, are the unbeatable
tools that continued to impose this vehicle on the market for over 20
years. The new model, soon in distribution, will be moreover characterised
by the recent and very efficacious 1,9 Turbodiesel Peugeot engine that
will support the 1,7 fuel single-point GM injection model. The first "all
forward" car was built in 1985 and it took its name from a city near Togliatti
: SAMARA.
These are the principal characteristics that differentiate this car from
the old one:
- front
wheel drive
- McPherson
front strut suspension
-
an engine that has been designed in collaboration with Porsche's engineers
-
level of finishing

 |
Besides
the first three-doors model (2108), since 1988 a five-door model (2109)
has been produced and, after five years, several models with different cubic
capacity (1.100cc, 1.300cc, 1.500cc), different fittings (specification
lux) and different equipments (eg. air-conditioning) have been created.
|
In
1992 the first deliveries of the model 21099, a three box car derived from
previous 21093 started. Since 1994 the exportation of new models with the
GENERAL MOTORS' electronic injection system started: LADA NIVA 2114 (1,7
i single point) and SAMARA 21099/21093 (1,5 i multi-point).
110 is the trade name of the latest new car produced by LADA. The 110, which
has been exported in 1999 since the end of spring, is destined to mark the
turning point of the Russian automobile industry. |

Its design, being a synthesis of the new partnerships carried out by the
Factory with the major worldwide producers of cars' components, has developed
a car that is able to match space, safety, performance, reliability and
comfort. It's a car designed to meet families' space requirements, it's
also characterised by careful trimmings, a loading capacity that exceeds
every expectation, a modern and rounded line, in order to follow all the
latest aesthetic research's rules that are typical for the best world automobile
production of our days. |
|
The
German-made engine, is a 1,5-lt. multi-point electronic injection unit
that permits to reach high performance, with a particularly limited fuel
consumption. In the new range of cars a new station wagon model is coming
soon together with a two box car version and will be available with a
fuel/GPL engine. The unbeatable ratio quality-price, which continues to
characterise the automobile production of this Factory, comes today to
propose to the Market a range of cars with good quality and at a very
low public selling price. This quality is a sign of a new imminent success.
To the next car
