THE DEVIL'S STONE
The Bernardinis' used to be a very powerful family of Lucca. Bernardini's Palace, in the homonymous square, was built on a project of Matteo Civitali (an important architect) in the 16th century.

The legend tells that the Devil persuaded Bernardini to built a new big palace on the spot where a votive aedicule of Mary laid, whose sacred image was adored and honoured by many believers in Lucca.

So the sacred image was destroyed to make room for the palace. Moreover, as the works proceeded slowly, Bernardini ordered the workers to use the materials of the destroyed aedicule. Those materials were used to build a window, on the right side of the main entrance, but a stone warped, refusing to be used for a jamb.

The bricklayers tried many times to place it correctly, but the stone kept on warping. They also tried to fix it with cramp-irons, but everything was unuseful. The frightened workers refused to handle that stone any more, and so it is still warped, called "Devil's stone" or "Bernardini's stone" by the people of Lucca.
