Lucida
was born in Lucca in 1606 by a non-lucchesian noble family, the Mansi.
The legend presents Lucida as a rich and beautiful woman, who loved
parties and luxury. She had many lovers who followed her during her
holidays out of town, but it seems that none came back to Lucca because
Lucida used to kill them in special traps where they disappeared.
When Lucida realized she was getting old, she signed an agreement with
the devil, dealing her soul for 30 years more of beauty and youth. Her
life went on as usual, but exactly 30 years later the devil tolled the
bell of the Hour's Tower, marking
the end of Lucida's life. According to one version of the story she suddenly
disappeared from her palace, leaving no traces but a deep hole. Another
version tells that the devil dragged Lucida all around the wall of Lucca
in his carriage of fire, then sunk in the little lake of the Botanical
Garden.
It is said that Lucida's relatives tried very hard to forget her,
destroying her portraits and her birth certificate. Otherwise, historical
documents certify that Lucida died on February 12th 1649 during the
plague, and that she is buried in her family vault in the Cappuccini's
church. |
