Several are the documents concerning the artistic civilization of Magna Graecia: sculptures, ceramics, jewels and remarkable golden objects which prove the importance of this town.
In the VIIIth century B.C., Taranto was choosen, by a group of Spartans, as the new native land thanks both to its great geographical position and to the fruitfulness of the surrounding country.
Human settlements in Taranto territory have been found since Neolithic; but it is in the following periods, during bronze and iron ages, that these settlements acquired more and more importance, in consequence of the historical events that, since those very ancient times, have been taking place in this region and, more generally, in the whole South.
Remarkable — for its quantity, quality and historical importance — is the material the Museum of Taranto offers the visitors interest. |
