History

A permanent Swedish Embassy to the Holy See was established already in 1453. The first ambassador was Birger Månsson who later came to be referred to as the father of the Swedish diplomacy. One important achievement of this early embassy to the Vatican was the securing of papal support for the establishment of the Uppsala University in 1477.

However, with the reformation, the diplomatic relations between Sweden and the Vatican were discontinued (1523) and not reestablished until 1983.
