Introductory note by the author:
The sound installation which accompanies the works of the "Paths of the Spirit: The Year Two Thousand" exhibition is entitled The Form of "G" and is made up of a sequence of twelve brief pieces. These take the name of electroacoustic counterpoints in their having been entirely conceived and realized using electronic equipment.
These counterpoints refer to and start out from the musical forms of the Christian liturgical tradition. Each piece develops an autonomous musical thought although in being interconnected without pauses of silence they go towards developing a unitary discourse.
The starting point was that of exploring an aspect common to all religions: that is, the element of the ritual. In placing the form in relation to the rite one has chosen to favour two aspects: the word-rhythm relationship and the gesture-silence relationship. These same relationships, on being individuated, have constituted a constant point of reference in the carrying out of each section and, in consequence, represent a common element.
Vice versa, the initial sound material – organ, voice and bells – singularly characterizes each counterpoint and while always undergoing more or less intense transformations it creates a strong tie with the acoustic experience of the Christian religious tradition, in this way facilitating that communicative process which ought to be at the basis of every artistic procedure.
As regards the acoustic diffusion, one has opted for a linear one without interruption (looping) with the aim of favouring the unity of the musical discourse, of best adapting it to the architectural space and of enabling a more strict compliance both with regards to the intentions shown by the exhibiting artists and to the same theme of the exhibition.
The whole work was carried out in the Studio of Electronic Music at the Cagliari Conservatory.
