"The urn is to be taken to
Sicily and set among the natural stone in the countryside near
Agrigento, where I was born". It' s difficult not to let
yourself caught by emotion, reading Pirandello' s last wishes.
"In a field of Saracen olive-trees at the edge of a pleteau
of blue clay looking out towards the African sea, stands the solitary
house ...".
In this house, in the district named Caos, not far from Agrigento,
you can feel the old time. In fact, restored in 1956 the house
has still its old splendor. It has a cane mesh ceiling with girdes
and the floor is made on the original pattern.
At the great entrance, on the walls, you can see the portrait
and the wonderful incisions that Bruno Caruso made to the writer.
The rooms have a serie of hand-bills about the comedies which
were performed and fascinating photos. In the beautiful nineteenth-century
writing-table, disposed in all of the four rooms, the first editions
of the books with autograph dedications and some manuscripts are
kept with care.
Besides you can find the original of the announcement of the wedding,
the Collar of Academic of Italy (his literary success was crowned
in 1929) and many letters written and received by Pirandello to
important persons. In the last room, to the right, there are table
and chairs of that epoch and a wonderful work-case which belonged
to Pirandello' s mother.
The museum is equipped with the most modern multimedial technology
and places free a video recorder at visitors disposal, in order
to allow people to have most dates and to observe all around the
house. Then, whoever would like to study in depth can go to Pirandello
Library Museum (Quadrivio Spinasanta) where he can find everything
as far as the playwright. The library is an "unicum"
with the Musem, made in fiftieth anniversary writer's death.
