Guy Fawkes Day

Nearly 400 years ago, in 1605, a man named Guy Fawkes tried to destroy the Houses of Parliament. He was Catholic and he thought that the King and the Government of  England were unfair to Catholics..

On November 5th Guy Fawkes and his friends decided to put some gunpowder under the Houses of Parliament where the King of England had a meeting; They wanted to kill the King and destroy the Government. The soldiers caught Guy Fawkes before  he could kill the King. They hanged Guy Fawkes and many of his friends.

Today, people in England celebrate Guy Fawkes Day and his plot by making a big bonfire. At the top of the bonfire they put a man made of straw and old clothes. They burn the straw man and have fireworks and sing this special song:

"Remember, remember, the fifth of November,
Gunpowder, treason and plot,
We see no reason why Gunpowder treason
Should ever be forgot!"
