Back to Techniques |
"Macramé" is a word of Arabic origin; some say it comes from the fusione of the words "mahrana" (fringe) e "rame" (knot), some other say from the word"migramah" (ornament fringe). It's anyway clear that the name shows the main feature of the technique of this lace: decorative knots and cords that create ornamental fringes and other patterns. Macramé can be worked on vertical threads coming from a tissue or on threads sewn at the tissue using a crochet, or putting vertical trheads on a horizontale one that at the end of the work is put away to sew the fringe to the tissue. This kind of lace work needs a pillow to support; while the work proceeds, it is fixed by pins. The different knots are made using only the hands. Traditionally there isn't any designs, the work is free; in general, it consists of geometrical patterns that end with fringes, more or less long.
