The Association "Il merletto nella cittą di Piero" (Lace in the town of Piero) was born in 1996 to rediscover and spread again the art of traditional Sansepolcro bobbin lace. The Association is placed in an old building in the center of Sansepolcro. At the ground floor there's the lace and embroidery school, where lessons take place. At the first floor the Town of Sansepolcro created a small museum devoted to Marcelli sisters, whose activity gave life to Sansepolcro lace. The museum is open on Saturdays and Sundays from 16 to 19 or by appointement. Sansepolcro bobbin lace requires (not usual in Italy) a flat pillow put on a stand that permits the pillow to move following the turns of the lace work. Linen thread is traditionally used, but form modern creation other threads can be used. Designs are very typical, based on Middle Age figures. The Association take always part into Sansepolcro International Lace Biennial.
