Group 1

Russia 3, Luxembourg 0

Russia easily defeated Luxembourg with a series of headers from Maxim Buznikin and Yegor Titov and a finally point-blank range shot from Dimitry Khokholv. Russia has yet to loose a match while Luxembourg is still on zero points.

Slovenia 2, Switzerland 2

In Slovenia, the visiting team scored its lead in the 20th minute by Kubilay Turkyilmaz, who later doubled in the 66th minute. Slovenia managed to open up the match late in the first half and the equalizer was scored at the 67th by substitute Milenko Acimovic. Slovenia now have five points from three games, while Switzerland has four from the same number... see stats

Group 2

Ireland 2, Estonia 0

Ireland easily swept Estonia aways with a 2-0 vicotry, goals scored by Mark Kinsella and Richard Dunne. The victory follows impressive Irish draws over powerful Portugal (1-1) and the Netherlands (2-2).

Netherlands 0, Portugal 2

A dominant Portugal outplayed the home team as Pauleta scored and also set up another one for team mate Conceiçao. Portugal now lead the group... see stats

Group 3

Iceland 1, Northern Ireland 0

At Reykjavik, the capital of Iceland, Throdur Gudjonsson scored the only goal in the 89th minute to seal Iceland's victory. The Northern Ireland goalkeeper came out and misjudged the ball, allowing the home team player to put in the ball from 6 metres.

Denmark 1, Bulgaria 1

At Copenhagen, Bulgaria managed to snatch an equalizer in teh 83rd minute by Dimitar Berbatov, thanks to a header from a corner kick. Denmark had scored 11 minutes earlier, with a low shot by Ebbe Sand.

Malta 0, Czech Republic 0

A stunning performance by the home team, who managed to hold the strong Czech Republic in its place and without conceding any goals. Malta came from a two game loosing streak... see stats

Group 4

Azerbaijan 0, Turkey 1

In Azerbaijan, Hakan Sukur scored in the second half on a pass from Arif Erden, which gave Turkey the victory in what was not a very exciting match. 

Moldova 0, Macedonia 0

At Chisinau, Lodova, the home team was held by Macedonia before a crowd of 6,000. 

Slovakia 0, Sweden 0

Slovakia did not succeed in taking advantage of the home ground and settled for a draw as both teams had few scoring chances on a night of defensive soccer... see stats 

Group 5

Belarus 2, Armenia 1

The game concluded quickly with first half goals by Aleksandr Khatskevich and Nikolai Ryndyuk for Belarus and Felix Khojoian for Armenia.

Poland 0, Wales 0

At Warsaw, Poland and Wales drew after a tough but cautious game of wasted opportunities.

Norway 0, Ukraine 1

At Oslo, AC Milan star-player Andrei Shevchenko scored the game-winning goal in the start of the second half. Shevcehnko first dribbled past defender Ronny Johnsen and then goalie Forde Olsen with a shot from 10 meters... see stats

Group 6

Croatia 1, Scotland 1

In Croatia, Scotland held the home tea. to a hard-fought draw, cementing its position atop the group. Scotland has seven points and Croatia two. Alen Boksic capped a furious start by the favoured Croats with a goal in the 16th minute. kevin Gallacher drew level in the 24th... see stats

Group 7

Israel 3, Bosnia-Herzegovina 1

Yossi Abukasis and Yaniv Katan gave Israel a quick victory, each scored 16 minutes apart.

Austria 1, Spain 1

At the Austrian capital, Spain managed to hold the home team to a draw as the Austrian coach Otto Baric played three strikers. Austria's striker Michael Baur scored in the 21st and was followed six minutes later by Ruben Baraja's equalizing header... see stats

Group 8

Lithuania 1, Hungary 6

 At Kaunas, Hungary tore the home team apart with a hat trick scored by Miklos Feher who was allowed to run free amongst the Lithuania defense. The match only drew 1000 fans in Lithuania's second city.

Italy 2, Georgia 0

Italy took the lead with a pair of penalties both converted by controversial player Alessandro Del Piero. The Azzurri are now in control of the group with seven points in three games... see stats

Group 9

Albania 2, Greece 0

At TIrana, the home team had a decisive victory over Greece with goals scored by Alban Bushi and Ervin Fakaj.

Finland 0, England 0

At Helsinki, England looked abysmal again just after four days after a 1-0 home loss to Germany that prompted Kevin Keegan to resign as coach. Fill-in coach Howard Wilkinson go tlittle out of the English players. England seemed to have scored in the 7th minute, when Teddy Sheringham had an open shot, but the goalkeeper had fouled the striker just outside the penalty area before the shot. French referee Alain Sars disallowed the shot and awarded a free kick which went into the wall of defenders... see stats
