Quando Cybill Shepherd viene chiamata ad interpretare il ruolo di Maddie, ha già al suo attivo molti film, tra i quali spiccano "Taxi Driver" e "The Lady Vanishes". E' guardando quest'ultimo che Glenn Gordon Caron, creatore della serie "Moonlighting", si ispirò al personaggio di Maddie. Tra Cybill e Bruce c'è subito intesa e anche attrazione, come da lei dichiarato nel suo libro "Cybill Disobedience". Questo affiatamento li aiuterà molto ad esprimere quelli che poi saranno i sentimenti dei loro personaggi.
