Kältemotor K0

(04.03.2000)

Cold Power Plant – K0

(04.03.2000)

The cold power plant K0 is a special thermical power plant. In it, on the right part, consisting of a turbine (T) (or piston engine), an electric generator (G) and a pump (P) for liquids, warmt up gas is expanded in the turbine until it reaches the saturation stage (wet vapour). This vapour passes the condenser where it is cooled down and therefor liquefies. The pump (P) now pumps the liquid back to the boiler.

As working fluidum can be used every gas with a very low boiling point. It could be, for example, propane, but there would be a preference for nitrogen or helium.

K0

The interesting part of this plant are not the engines at the rhight side, but the tower at the left side where takes place the heat excange. It consists of a cabinet (1) devided in two parts by a separator board (2). The upper part of the cabinet contains the heat exchanger (4) and the boiler (5). The flaps (3) permit to control the quantity of air that can come in contact with the boiler (5). At the top of the cabinet, there is an air-compressor (V). It can be moved by a separate motor or by the turbine (T) itself. It forces the input of air token from the environment, at a higher pressure into the cabinet (2-3 bar or more). Therefor, the air in the upper part of the cabinet will become also warmer than the environmental temperature.

When the plant is off, the boiler (5) is filled in part with liquid fluidum, the rest of the plant contains vapour of the fluidum. The pressure is the same over all parts: it is the boiling pressure of the liquid fluid at the specific temperature of the moment. When the compressor (V) is moved, the air pressure in the upper part of the cabinet will increase, and therefor also the air temperature. This temperature will now be higher than the temperature of the gas contained in the heat exchanger (4). Now, heat can flow from the air into the heat exchanger, and the gas heated up expands, creating a pressure difference between the two sides of the turbine (T). The turbine begins to move, and the expanded gas now passes into the condenser (6). There, it will be cooled down by the air that has passed the turbine (T1) moving it, and therefor has newly expanded its pressure cooling down. But having also passed part of its heat to the heat exchanger (4) cooling somewhat down, the resulting temperature of the air after having passed the turbine (T1), will be lower than the external temperature, and therefor it can cool down also the gas contained in the condenser (6). The power saved by the turbine (T1) can be used to move a second compressor (V1) that helps to keep low the pressure, and therefor the temperature, in the condenser part of the cabinet. So a part of that gas can condense, decreasing therefor greatly the pressure at the low-pressure side of the turbine (T). So there will continue to flow gas through the turbine, and the pressure in the boiler (5) will sink. The liquid gas at its boiling temperature present in it will partially evaporate, subtracting the necessary great quantity of heat to the air that is in contact with the boiler. Therefor, the air in the upper part of the cabinet will cool down further before it expands to the external pressure present in the condenser room.

This is the determinant part of the whole plant: now there is avaliable enough air with a very low temperature (far below the external environmental temperature) which can be used to cool down the gas in the condensator (6) liquefying it at a pressure that is lower than the boiling pressure in the boiler (5). Now there are no more obstacles against the flow of heat from the environmental temperature into an engine where part of it can be transformed in mechanical energy. The remaining low-temperature-energy can be delivered to the cold air that leaves the lower part of the cabinet and returns to the environment at a lower temperature.

The power needed by the compressor (V) is regained twice: on the one hand, with the higher pressure grows also the heat gap to the heat exchanger (4), and so a farly higher quantity of heat can flow to the working fluidum, and on the other hand, the temperature of the air, when it passes the opening (2), decreases considerably. In this way the low pressure that can be reached inside the condenser (6) decreases (incrementing therefor also the pressure gap between the two sides of the turbine (T)). A part of the power needed to move the compressor (V) can be regained by a turbine (T1).

Acting the flaps (3), it is possible to control the quantity of air that can come in contact with the boiler. To increment the temperature difference between the gas in the heating exchanger (4), the flaps are moved in a position that permits only to a low quantity of air to have contact with the boiler (5), decreasing in that way the boiling temperature of the liquid, and consequently also the temperature of the fluid inside the heat exchanger (4). So, still more heat can pass from the air to the gas. At the boiler there will in any case be reached a state of balance, now at a lower temperature level: there has finally to evaporate the same quantity of liquid as the quantity delivered to the boiler by the pump (P). The lower temperature level reached in this way by the air, after its passing through the turbine (T1) is still transmitted to the condenser, and the pressure in it decreases also, at least of the same value as in the boiler (5).

Motore a freddo – K0

(04.03.2000)
