Pictures of Sulcis
A milestones pioneer

1935- Antonio Muntoni was born in Giba, (Cagliari, Sardinia) a little village of Sulcis. This territory has always been historically important thanks to the mining resources, beside the agricultural and sheep-farming. The economy was however very poor.

1949- The years of Antonio's childhood and his education were very difficult, due to the two world wars. Surviving was the main goal for the majority of the people of Sulcis. It's surprising, in this context, the growing passion of the young Antonio for photography and for image. 1949 was the year of the purchase of the first camera. Antonio was one of the first people in Sulcis to own one. Antonio was 14 years old, and since that moment, he could develop his creativity, converting in pictures the great love for his childhood sites.

1960- Also Antonio had to deal with the difficult economic situation, and, like many others, he was forced to emigrate. Belgium became his second native country. Antonio continued to find the possibility to feed his passion for photography. It is well-known that artists need inspiration for their work, Antonio desperately needed the Sardinian colours, scents and landscapes.

1963- One day during this period Antonio received a postcard from Sardinia. This was the catalyst for him to return to Sardinia, opening a photographic studio, among the the scepticism of his friends. The first years were not too easy, but Antonio succeeded in making himself known. He shared his time between his normal work and the research of unknown landscapes of Sardinia, characteristic sights and wonderful naturalist scenery. The majority of his subject were rare birds, living in the wet lands of Sulcitan coast. In parallel he started the work of research and recovery of ancient photographs: he put together a rich collection. Today Antonio is still a reference point for many people who require images of the history of Sulcis, from 1900 to now.

1990- During the occasion of the inauguration of the new municipality of Giba it was possible to admire the photographic-historical archive of Antonio Muntoni. All the material was shown in the exhibition curated by communal administration, from title: "Giba 1900-1960, images of 60 years of history and popular traditions through the photographic document".

1999- Antonio Muntoni celebrates his 50th year of activity. For this event he dedicates to this site a sample of his photographic collection, entirely dedicated to Sulcis, for visitors to view.
