Nickelback: The Banning At Hofstra University

"I didn’t even know you knew about that," laughs Nickelback guitarist Ryan Peake when SonicMonk’s M&M asks him: "You guys are banned from what university?"

It might seem those Nickelback boys' roadie dares are getting more and more out of hand. Everyone knows by now or has at least heard about the Circulating Air Fan vs. The Drum Tech Penis story and the Matt Good Slag in Rolling Stone. However, thanks to the SonicMonk investigative team, you are about to read our exlusive story which details, for the first time anywhere: The Banning of Nickelback At Hofstra University.

The first thing Peake does is attempt to set the story straight. There’s nothing worse than having a good lead on an Internet rumour, and not having the "facts" correct. According to Peake, "We didn’t officially get banned. We got a nice talking to from the Rent-A-Cops."

The story goes: "Chad had bought a couple Fat Boy wide-tire mini bikes. They have one gear and it’s just, ON! We were ripping around the parking lot. We had just skated with the Islanders."

Before Peake can escape without telling the whole tale, SonicMonk places a phone call this morning to the "rent-a-cops" at Hofstra University. Located in Hempstead, NY, the unfriendly fellows with heavy New York accents at student security said they did indeed have an incident on file from the show of Nov. 28.

They refused to speak about it on the phone or fax the details to SonicMonk. However, Mike (no last name provided) stated: "Yeah, those guys are banned, but we don’t like to talk about these things over the phone with people we don’t know."

Let’s just say the campus police didn’t think the following story was as hilarious as Peake and SonicMonk’s M&M thought.

Peake continues with his hockey tale before getting back to the scandal. "The thing about hockey stars is that they’re college punks like us," he says. They're "really fun to hang out with. Awesome, awesome guys. That’s the whole thing. These guys [Islander players] hopped on the bikes and whipped around. One of them, maybe it was the bus driver that got us in shit, but we were ripping around and ended up on the rugby field."

Campus security grudgingly did confirm that these bikes did indeed end up on the rugby field. Although they did seem like they wanted to know how to contact Nickelback as they attempted to pump us for info. If they’d like to return the bikes, feel free to send them to the SonicMonk office. We’ll be sure they get the bikes to them, but not until after we rip up a rugby field or two.

Peake continues the tale of The Banning At Hofstra University: "They tore up the grass coming back. They parked it by the bus and I hopped on and we had to go to soundcheck so I roared it into the venue and that’s when I got stopped." Peake recalls what the "rent-a-cop" said to him. "Keep in mind these guys frightened the beejesus out us via the phone. "You guys come here. We can ban you from the site as you’re ripping up our field." Their response, "And we’re like, ‘Yeah, whatever. Sounds good. Sorry. Sorry.’ Anything to get them to move on so we can go do soundcheck."

An associate of Nickelback’s was later caught by the rent-a-cops. The punishment, besides just the banning: "At the end of the night our merch guy and someone else took them out burning around. They confiscated the bikes. Maybe they did ban us. It was a fun night, though."
