[Albert from Giussano] - Captain of fortune and leader of a "Death Company", who fought the battle of Legnano (29 May 1176) leading the troops of Milan against Frederick the Red Bearded, Emperor of the Holy Roman Empire. During the Risorgimento his name became simbol of freedom for the country.
Bartolomeo Colleoni
(1400-1475) - One of the most famous captain of fortune, fought for Venice and Milan; he was a main actor at the peace of Lodi (1454).
Alberico da Barbiano
(1348-1409) - Captain of fortune, fought with the armies of Naples, Milan, and the Pope.
Giovanni delle Bande Nere
[John of the Black Bands] (1498-1526) A captain of fortune, son of Giovanni de' Medici, of the cadet branch. He died fighting the lansquenet army of Charles V.
Luigi Cadorna
(1850-1928) Italian general, he was the supreme commander of the Italian army till the disastrous battle of Caporetto.
Armando Diaz
(1861-1928) Italian general. He fought in the war with Libia (1911-12) and then in the First World War; he became supreme commander after Cadorna, and as such was in charge during the victorious battle of Vittorio Veneto that concluded the war.
Raimondo Montecuccoli
(1609-1680) General under the Holy Roman Empire, he fought in the Thirty Years War, and in other war of the Empire. He was also a writer of warfare treatises and left many works.

Muzio Attendolo (1369-1424), captain of fortune under various armies. He was nicknamed Sforza by Alberico da Barbiano; he was the father of Francesco I Sforza, Duke of Milan, the founder of the Sforza family.

Luigi Amedeo di Savoia Duca degli Abruzzi
[Lewis of Savoy Duke of Abruzzi] (1873-1933) Italian explorer, his enterprises were the circumnavigation of the globe (1894-96, 1903-05), the exploration of the Arctict and many climbings. During WWI he was commander in chief of the Italian Navy.

[Marcus Atilius Regulus] (? - 250 BC) Roman general; subject of legendary account of his heroic endurance as a captive in Carthage during the Punic Wars.
Publio Cornelio Scipione Africano
(236 - 183 BC) Roman commander of the most important gens (family) of the Republic of Rome. He commanded the Roman legions against Carthago during the Punic Wars and was the winner at the battle of Zama.
Gneo Pompeo Magno
(106-48 BC) Roman commander, he achieved his glory and triumph in the wars against the pirates and Mithridates of Pontus. He founded the triumvirate with Caesar and Crassus, and fought in a civil war with the former at the death of latter, till his own death.
Caio Mario
(157-86 BC) Roman consul, he was victorious in many wars against the Cimbri and Teutons. Then he fought a civil war against Silla till his death.
Claudio Tiberio Nerone Germanico
(10 BC - 54 AD) Roman emperor, son of Druso and brother of Germanico. He was more liberal than his precedessors and interested in reforming the empire. He was assasinated with poison, probably by his wife Agrippina, mother of Nero.
Lucio Paolo Emilio
(?-216 BC) Roman consul, he was the commander of the Roman legions at the defeat of Cannae, where he died.
Lucio Cornelio Silla
(138-78 BC) Roman leader and statesman. He was the enemy of Mario during the civil wars, which he won with the seizure of the capital, Rome. He suppressed all the opposition in the blood, putting in shadow his memory.
Caio Giulio Cesare Ottaviano Augusto
(63 BC - 14 AD) Born Caio Ottavio, he became adoptive son of Julius Caesar. At the death of his father, he acquired his name and vindicated his assassination. After the triumvirate with Antonio and Lepido, he started a civil war, that ended with his total control of the army. He became the first emperor of Rome, acquiring the title of Augustus.

(53-117 AD) Roman emperor. He commanded the Roman army in various wars in the east, expanding the borders and creating new provinces.

Nerone Claudio Druso
(38-9 BC) Roman commander, he conquested the region of the Danube, that became a Roman province, and fought against German people. He was the father of Germanico and the emperor Claudio.

(15 BC - 19 AD) German commander, he fought in the German region where he recieved his nickname (Germanicus = of Germany). He then when in the East, expanding the Roman Empire. He is the father of the emperor Caligola and grandfather of the emperor Nero.
