Galleria Colonna **
In one of Rome's largest and most opulent private palaces, built 1730, this museum contains the private collection of the Colonna Family, that traces its ancestry to a Roman Emperor. An enfilade of golden rooms, stretching out in front of one with 18C mirrors painted on the surface: magnificent though sadly starting to chip. Hundreds of mirrored wall sconces reflect the candlelight. The velvet throne of Martin V (1417-31), the scholarly family Pope was moved to this palace when it was built two centuries after his death. Notable paintings are Annibale Carracci's "Peasant eating beans" and Tintoretto's "Narcissus".
