About Sardinia
Sardinia, an island older than time itself, where nature
and time have stood still to hinder this wonderful sea and land from changing
and have preserved in time this Italian Mediterranean Island and its peoples
with their culture and friendliness. Sardinian history still raises discussion
among experts, with their different beliefs and interpretations, and it
is impossible to dig anywhere without finding a historic relic dating
back up to 6000 years. Sardinia sits below Corsica, in the middle of the
Mediterranean Sea, between Italy and Spain. This second largest Island
in the Mediterranean Sea is one of the so-called "Autonomous Italian Regions",
due perhaps to its unique culture that sets it apart from mainland Italy
and even from Sicily. One thing is certain therefore, Sardinia is different
from the rest of Italy.
Sardinia can be said, is the guardian of known
and unknown history, enshrining the oldest historical sites in Europe
(visible). Many ancient Empires…. came to Sardinia, some of them simply
lived side by side with the Sardi of the Nuraghic age, while others were
only interested in conquering what areas of Sardinia they could. First
the Phoenicians (900 to 800 bc), Carthaginians (400 bc), then the Romans,
Byzantines, Vandals, Moors, Sardinian Giudicati, followed by the City
States of Genoa and Pisa, by Spain for 400 years till the formation of
the Italian Monarchy, when the King Of Sardinia became King of Italy.
There were some that failed, most notably Napoleon’s great forces, although
known to have been defeated at Waterloo, they were actually defeated in
Sardinia both at sea and land when an attempt was made to conquer the
island in the late 1700's. All these conquering civilizations have left
visible marks both on Sardinia's landscape and on its people. Perhaps,
this is reason why traditions and cultures change from region to region
within the island and all together differ from any other countries in
Europe.
With its 1,850 km coastline, nearly a quarter
of Italy's beach land, Sardinia is a dreamland for beach-goers, (little
known fact, Sardinia always places in the top 5 of Italy's top 10 beaches,
this year being no exception). Of these 1850 km, less than 300 km have
been urbanized. Visit Sardinia's well known beaches or venture out on
your own to visit some of the most barren beaches known to man and you
will find out that Sardinian beaches are all different, the fine grain
of sand can change or the colour of water, yet each beach is unique and
breath-taking. Sardinia possesses more than coastline beauties, the mountainous
inland reflects at times the character of its inhabitants. Quaint towns
and villages dot a breath-taking landscape. Each village has different
traditions and beliefs that differ from the next village just a few kilometers
away. Yet, we, Sardinian people, have one great thing in common, we all
adore the lady that allows us, day after day, to place our feet on her.
