  Pizzocorno

Pizzocorno is an hamlet of Ponte Nizza and is located on a mount at 478 meters s.l.m. near the street to Sant'Alberto. Its population is about 300 people. Its territories were Malaspina's feuds. Probably there were two castles but there aren't remains of one of this. The other probably was the principal castle and today is possible to see the old foundation above the town.In the book written by Goggi there are many document on the castle. Obizzo Malaspina, marquis of Oramala, sold the most important castle, in 1158, to Guglielmo Cachi, abbot of Sant'Alberto. It cost 122 Pavia's silver librae and six money. Moreover Goggi underline that Obizzo Malaspina was analphabet and he couldn't sign the contract. Another book written by Cavagna Sangiuliani speak about the castle of Pizzocorno. Near that there were a Malaspina marquis' villa. The abbey of Sant'Alberto was a very important category on town of Pizzocorno.In XII century the abbot of Sant'Alberto became lord of Pizzocorno.The feud was through two valleys, Nizza and Staffora valleys. On the west there were Cecima and Malaspina's marquisate of Godiasco. On the north there were Calcinara, Trebbiano and the marquisate of Casarasco. On the east there were the marquisate of Oramala and the feud of Sagliano. Both of them are properties of Malaspina. The feud of Pizzocorno includes all the villages, the mills, the towers and the woods near its. The abbey of Sant'Alberto, on 13th June 1449, sold the castle and the royal villa to lord Luigi dal Verme. Luigi Dal Verme died the same year and Pietro Dal Verme, Luigi's son, inherited the castle. After this period many information many important information were lost. In 1486 Eustachian of Piacenza bought the feud and the royal villa. The Dal Verme family, during their marquisate, restructured the two castles in Pizzocorno. Soon the Eustachian olds the fields and the castles to Manfredo Malaspina. The castles and the feud were properties of the Malaspina until Napoleon Bonaparte. Is possible seeing the castle remains in fact there are on the pathway from Pizzocorno to Sant'Alberto. The pathway start in Pizzocorno near the last house on the left. This pathway calls "Roman Street". The castle is in an open space where you can see the tower foundation. The tower probably had circular base. Is very difficult value the castle extension. Castle built on a mount where there were many springs. The altitude is 565 meters s.l.m.l
