This is a
typical
alpine village situated on a green
highland between Mount
Ročn
and Corno di Tres.
It
is one of the oldest and highest villages of the Val di Non.
The archaeological
findings proved his ancient origins. A number of typical Roman graves
were found here. Some other objects decorating the graves are now
preserved in the museum of
Rovereto.
|
|
The
village has preserved its original urban structures, farm houses and
palaces; like those near Piazza Degasperi which have stone portals,
entrance halls, frescoes and chiselled scripting (one house dates back to
1579). One fresco can be seen on the Ročn road.
|
Behind the
church, uphill on Via Predaia, interesting architectural elements can be
seen (which are of local tradition): a portal from 1704 with a coat of
arms, an unusual pointed arch. At the top of the hill, besides the
playground, there is relief of St. Barbara, patron of miners.
The Parish of St.
Agatha is the work of Pietro Bianchi and decorated by Metodio
Ottolini (1933)
|
The
big pottery stoves are typical of Sfruz. This craft work started in
the Renaissance by "maestri fornelari" became famous thanks to
the beautiful decorated majolica stoves sold in Austria, Alto Adige and Lombardia.
|
|
What to do
Sfruz offers a lot of pleasant walk, excursions on a green highland and in the woods on horseback and
by mountain bike.
The locality of
Credai is just 10 minutes from Sfruz, with a tourist centre along the
road towards Predaia. Continuing on, we encounter the locality of the
Sette Larici and the Sores refuge; from here we can undertake a
pleasurable hike up the Anauni mountains. Path n. 503 takes us to the
Corno peak of
Tres (1812 m,
3 hours) and passing the Predaia refuge and the Rodeva mountain hut. From
the Sette Larici, on path n. 501, we can reach the
peak of
Mount Ročn
(2116 m, 4 hours).
|
|
Sports facilities: indoor swimming pool,
orienteering centre, illuminated tennis courts, volleyball and basketball court, bocce
ball fields, riding school, fishing on the
lakes of Coredo.
In only 30 minutes
you reach the Noce river to play canoe, kayak and rafting.
|
The equipped playgrounds are kept for
children. A public library is open.
In
winter the plateau of Predaia offers a ski lift with ski slopes right for
children, cross country slopes and ice rink. It's possible to reach about
an hour the
MARILLEVA-FOLGARIDA-MADONNA DI CAMPIGLIO and PAGANELLA ski
resort.

Don stands on a
morainic plateau along the western slopes of
Mount Ročn, bounded by the valleys of
Avena and Val Fredda creeks, joining near a place called Campanile
dell'Orso. The village is divided in Villa di Sopra, Villa di Mezzo,
Villa di Sotto, and a recent residential area in the Brusadi
locality.
The St. Brigid's Parish Church was built in the 19th century as a
replacement for the ancient building of the 15th century. Inside, it
preserves a fine marble altar, a painting with St. Brigida, wooden statues
representing St. Peter and Paul, and a Way of the Cross by M. Lampi.
Remarkable are also the decorations of the presbytery realized in 1910 by
U. Tasselli of Mantua, and the altar-piece by A. Richter placed among the
organ pipes. Up in the bell tower, the little bell called
"pitochella", offered in 1761 by Earl Thun as a recall for the
population on tax-days, still rings. Some interesting ancient buildings
are House Simbeni, House Zilosi with its Mother Mary's fresco by M.
Lampi, and House Endrici where Celestino, archbishop of Trento from 1904 to 1940, was
born. It is decorated with a votive fresco of 1747 by M. Lampi, a portal
with the family escutcheon, and a walled plaque as a memorial to its
famous inhabitant.
What to do
Don offers a lot of pleasant walk, excursions on a green highland and in the woods on horseback and
by mountain bike.
From Don
the Sanctuary of St. Romedius is reached along the path n. 539. It takes
1 hour to go down the fascinating valley enclosed between two vertical
rocky spurs. More difficult (about 4 hours) is the excursion towards
Mount Ročn (2.116 m.), crossing over
Malga Sanzeno. Through a deep narrow passage you get to the
ravine of the Sass creek in Fondo that
over the centuries has excavated a 50 m. deep canyon. On its borders arise
a number of habitations.
|
Sports facilities: indoor swimming pool, orienteering centre illuminated tennis courts,
volleyball and basketball court, bocce ball fields, riding
school, fishing on the
Lake Smeraldo in
Fondo.
|
Near Don there is a nine-hole golf
course supported by a four-hole executive practice course and a practice
wall for rock climbing.
|
The
equipped
playgrounds are kept for
children.
In
winter Don offers chair lifts with sky slopes, cross country slopes and
ice rink.
It's possible to reach about an hour the
MARILLEVA-FOLGARIDA-MADONNA DI CAMPIGLIO and PAGANELLA ski resort.
