The recent important decisions to favour the liberalisation of energy market and the diversification of energy sources, it emphasizes the necessities of the islands, overall the islands not linked to the trasnational networks, to participate in the modernisation and innovation technologic actions and to develop a larger energy autonomy through the use of RES.

Besides at the growth of the natural water request, overall in the Mediterranean area, corresponds the growth of the population and a limited availability of resources. A datum that becomes acute in islands, destination of significant tourists flow and in the summer period when higher is the need and the per-capite consumption.

The purpose of this Conference is how the collaboration and the comparison between the European areas using the RES, constitute a possibility to favour the sustainable development in the desalinisation process, in the water management and also in the energy use.

The European Commission with the White Paper "energy for the future: Renewable Energy Sources", the Campaign for the Take-Off , that runs from year 2000 to year 2003, the recent important decisions and the last Common Position of the European Parliament on the promotion of electricity produced from renewable energy sources, set out a Community Strategy and an Action Plan to increase RES market penetration, to improve security of energy supply, to reduce energy dependency and to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

The islands constitute an ideal field implementing the Communities Key action and a laboratory for the development of technologic innovation using water and energy systems.

In fact the islands :

• Depend for a great part from external energy sources;
• have greater potentials of the RES use;
• increasing the season energy and water supply due of the tourist flows, emphasizes the themes of management and supplying and also the fragility of the environmental system.

Last years the Little Island International Conferences point up the intent to realise a sustainable development solving the energy and water problems.

This is a choice inside the framework of the innovative norms and the technologic innovations, at the international level, which can give great advantages for the big potentialities, and help to solve energy and water problems in the long period..

• To promote the objective of 100% of RES on the Islands.
• To promote the development on the large scale of RES in the Islands
• To identify the technologies using RES for the desalinisation plants and to deepen the relation theme between water and energy.
• To promote the development of innovative vehicles for the sustainable mobility on the islands
• To promote the know-how of the financial tools on the energy sector
• To promote the international co-operation for the development of RES on the tourism sector.

Papers, which cover the above mentioned objectives are welcomed

Authors wishing to submit their contribution should read following instructions and send an abstract to the address below.

The text should not exceed one page (size A4, 210 x 297). In addition, authors should send 2 explanatory pages.

The authors will be notified by the end of September of the decision of the selection committee, and they will receive the instructions for the preparation of the final papers for the Book of Proceedings.
