Roma 15 maggio1848 - 11 aprile 1939
Costa, partecipando assiduamente all'attività dei movimento e proseguendo
Francisco.
His parents desired that it became a lawyer but he succeeded in giving
him to the painting enrolling himself in the academy of Belle Arti of Rome
where was a student of Francesco Coghetti, Alessandro Capaltí, and
Guglielmo De Sanctis that addressed him to the study from the true. Hardly
eighteen year-old, it was enlisted voluntary with the Alps Hunters of Garibaldi,
participating in the Trentino Country. Finished the war it completed the
artistic formation to Naples under the guide of Domenico Morelli. At the
end of 1871 he returned to Rome where it exposed at the International Artistic
Association in the Casina of the Pincio different historical-political
pictures inspired to the risorgimental events ("The Cairoli's boat”, “The
prisoners of Mentana”), getting a notable consent day criticism. In 1875
it was one of the founders of the "Society of the Roman Acquerellisti"(water
color), with Ettore Roesler Franz, Pious Joris and Cesare Biseo, and it
was also devoted to the scenography for some Roman Theatres (it painted
where the curtain of the Politeama Romano that represented “The fight of
Orazio Coclite on the bridge Sublicio”.
In 1880 went to England where it had the opportunity of taking
an interest to the landscape painting of the old school, attracted by the
searches of light and atmospheres of Joseph M. W. Turner, from the depth
naturalism of John Constable and from the water-colors of Peter De Wint,
suffering above all influence of this last.He was held back in London
over ten years visiting Scotland, Ireland and the whole country of Wales
beginning to paint from the truth bewitched from the Country, English and
confessing that only after this permanence of his in London, "country of
the modern landscape", its eyes were opened to the light. During the English
stay, as during the frequent return, it participated to important Shows
exposing, suggestive views of the Tamigi that were very appreciated by
the criticism and by the public. Returned to Rome in 1891 it exposed to
the Review of the water-colourists and it was one of the animators of the
Society “In Art Liberty” broken down by Nino Costa, he participates, assiduously
to the activity of the movement and continuing in the practice of the landscape
from the tru, had been bewitching for that Roman summer that pushes "the
light to stretch the time out of the confinements of the day" and that
every evening is drowned in the diaphanous atmosphere of sunsets. Loosened
this Society it was one of the founders of the " XXVs " hocking himself
with great love and interest to withdraw from the true the manifold and
varied aspects of the Roman, desolate, silent, melancholy but rich Country
of the memoirs of the greatness of the Urbe, interpreting with great feeling,
delicacy and sensibility the sunny cheerfulness of his landscapes. To the
beginning he was the secretary of the group nicknamed the " cricket ",
while subsequently been becoming the spiritual head of it, the " Capoccetta
" he was called, title already of the Coleman. He was the painter of the
light, the chorister of the sun, for the festive color, the transparent
clarifies and the brightness solar that floods always his pictures, pregnant
of poetry and of incisiveness. It painted to oil succeeding, however, particularly
happy, for the versatility and the particular effectiveness of such technique,
in the water-colour. In his pictures he has always tried to interpret faithfully
the "hidden poetry of the lawns and the Roman woods", the course of the
Tevere river that painted from the sources to the mouth, renewing continuously
himself in front of the show of the nature, feeling more than every other
the atmosphere of the Country made with a minute technique never in the
first floors neither too much precise in the funds, always however respectful
of the form and of the true one ("Earth of job near Terracina", "Covoninella
Roman Campaign ", " Tevere ", " Tronco di quercia", “Roma dal Pincio”).
besides the subjects of contemporary history and risorgimental, with which
it began, were hocked during the London period to withdraw the country
English and particularly the river Tames and then, in the period of the
maturity, it was entirely inspired to the roman landscapes, to the picturesque
views of the countries, to the swamps pontine and to the Tevere: to that
so beloved Roman Country and that surrenders with that characteristic "
cut " consistent in to create imaginary first floors and almost in to distort
to art the perspective yes to widen better the scene for to make the majesty
and the solemnity note of the Agro. Its works are preserved in Rome at
the National Gallery of Modern art ("Graves Appia street ", “Roman Sunset
"), in the Town Gallery of Modern art, in the Gallery of the National academy
of St. Luca and in the Museum in Rome (to which the widow, in the first
anniversary of the death, it gave over 200 paintings), and to Turin in
the Gallery of Modern art ("At the strata of the Amiata mountain"). it
Exposed, over that to Rome and the Biennal exhibitions Venetians, to London
in the Royal Accademie, Paris, Berlin, Monk, Dusseldorf and San Francisco.
