Il padre Augusto, un agiato architetto, lo indirizzò agli studi classici ma sin dal 1895 cominciò ad avvicinarsi al mondo dell'arte posando come paggio per Lodovico Seitz, un epigono dei Nazareni, che stava decorando la Galleria dei Candelabri in Vaticano. Tre anni dopo vinse il pensionato nazionale e fu ammesso all'Istituto di Belle Arti di Roma, dedicandosi con passione alla pittura ma, deluso degli insegnamenti troppo accademici, naturalmente incline ad una pittura più fresca ed istintiva, subì l'influenza prima di Domenico Morelli, poi di Francesco Paolo Michetti ed infine di Antonio Mancini con cui strinse una profonda amicizia. Nel 1901 andò in Spagna dove si trattenne per studiare la pittura di Goya e Velazquez, completando la propria maturazione artistica sia copiando le opere di questi grandi maestri sia ritraendo dal vero scene popolari e paesaggi accecati dal sole. In seguito soggiornò e studiò anche in Germania, Francia, Olanda ed Inghilterra affinando sempre di più la propria sensibilità. Tornato in Italia nel 1903 fece prima delle esperienze divisioniste e poi entrò nel gruppo dei "XXV", soprannominato "il cane pechinese", ritraendo i paesaggi di Scanno e Roccaraso, l'aspra terra abruzzese, così caratteristica ed originale e della Sardegna, con un linguaggio ormai personale e completamente affrancato da tutte le suggestioni precedenti nonché le Paludi pontine e i suoi abitanti ("Buttero"). Dipinse anche interni, con luce soffusa, e figure femminili, sorprese con malizia e grazia in atteggiamenti intimi, con un segno rapido e nervoso, tendendo al liberty e al dannunzianesimo per quell'armonia raffinata di tinte tenere e di bianchi sfumati con cui si esprimeva. In questo periodo primeggiò nell'ambiente artistico romano e venne nominato Accademico di San Luca. Dopo la prima guerra lavorò come scenografo per il Cinema ("Redenzione", "Cirano", "I promessi sposi", "Ben Hur") e nel 1925 andò al Cairo a dirigere la Scuola di Belle Arti. Tornò a Roma nel 1940 e, ormai dimenticato dal pubblico e dai critici, a causa della lunga assenza dalla vita artistica europea, finiva i suoi giorni in povertà. Tra i soggetti dei suoi quadri - che dipinse ad olio, acquerello e tempera, con una tecnica sciolta ed ariosa - oltre ai paesaggi ed alle scene di genere nei vivaci costumi abruzzesi e sardi, vi sono anche marine, ritratti, eleganti figure femminili in déshabillé, interni in penombra a tinte bianche, grigie ed azzurre e la vita femminile elegante e mondana in genere che trovò in lui un sensibile interprete cogliendola in atteggiamenti che rendevano meravigliosamente "tutto ciò che nella donna c'è di misterioso, di fragile, di mutevole, di appassionato e anche di artificioso "tensiosa", "Il gioiello", "Il rossetto").
Espose alla Biennale di Venezia del 1905 ("Contadini di Scanno" e "Sui monti") ed a quella del 1909 presentò venti opere ad una sua personale (tra cui "In Sardegna ", "In giardino" e "Allo specchio "),mentre fu presente alla Il Biennale Romana ("Donne arabe") ed alla VII Quadriennale Romana del 1956 ("A fontana di Trevi") oltre che ad Esposizioni a Parigi. Sue opere si trovano a Roma nella Galleria Nazionale d'Arte Moderna ("La visita", "Le villeggianti", "In ritardo", '71 giorno"), nella Galleria comunale d'Arte moderna ("La Sultana") e nella Galleria Nazionale dell'Accademia di San Luca, nella Prefettura di Pescara, nella Pinacoteca Civica di Ascoli Piceno, nella Galleria d'Arte Moderna di Palermo, di Udine e Ricci -Oddi di Piacenza.
