Biography

Romano Conversano è nato il 30 settembre 1920 a Rovigno d'Istria da padre pugliese e madre istriana, figlia del pittore Giuseppe Bino. Compiuti gli studi all'Accademia di Belle Arti a Venezia, insegna per alcuni anni a Pola. Durante la guerra, pur impegnato nella Resistenza, trova il modo di organizzare a Belluno un cenacolo di giovani artisti fra i quali Tancredi e Romano Parmeggiani. Si lega d'amicizia con Emilio Vedova e Rodolfo Sonego. Dal 1946 al '54 risiede a Rovereto, animando l'ambiente artistico e culturale della vivace città trentina. Dopo viaggi di studio in Francia, Spagna e Fiandre, che rappresentano nella sua pittura altrettanti "periodi", si stabilisce nel 1954 definitivamente a Milano, dove tuttora vive e lavora partecipando alle maggiori manifestazioni artistiche. Nel 1957 restaura un piccolo castello a picco sul mare a Peschici, nel Gargano, dove si ritira quando può a contatto con una natura solare e primitiva: è il periodo dedicato alla "Puglia antica" contrapposto a quello delle "Donne d'oggi" del Nord con i loro problemi esistenziali. Nel 1974 gli viene conferito l'Ambrogino d'oro dal Comune di Milano. Dal 1980 è membro dell'Accademia degli Agiati di Rovereto.

Romano Conversano was born on 30th September 1920 in Rovigno d'Istria. His father was a native of Apulia and his mother was the daughter of the painter Giuseppe Bino, a native of Istria. He finished his studies at the Venice Academy of Fine Arts and taught for a few years in Pola. During the war, as well as being involved with the Resistance, he managed to organize, in Belluno, a circle of young artists among whom were Tancredi and Romano Parmeggiani. He formed a friendship with Emilio Vedova and Rodolfo Sonego. From 1946 to '54 he lived in Rovereto, contributing to the artistic and cultural atmosphere of the lively city of Trentino. After his study trips through France, Spain and Flanders, which represent "periods" of his painting, he settled permanently in Milan, where he has lived and worked since 1954, participating in the major artistic events. In 1957 he restored a small castle placed on a sheer drop above the sea at Peschici, in the Gargano, where he retreats to, when he can, to immerse himself in sunny and primitive natural surrounding: this is the period of "Puglia antica" (ancient Apulia) opposed to that of "Donne d'oggi" (today's women), of the North, with their existential problems. In 1974 he was honored with the golden Ambrogino from the City of Milan. From 1980 he has been a member of the Accademia degli Agiati of Rovereto.
