Getting there

Coat of Arms of the Vatican CityBy bus: Bus 64 - This line runs from the main train station (Stazione Termini) to St. Peter's. It is probably the most frequent and most crowded bus line in Rome as well as being the favorite bus lines for pickpockets (and girl-gropers). Beware!
Bus 62 takes you from Piazza Bologna through the center to the Vatican area.
Buses 23, 32, 49, 81 492 and 991 all have their last stop in Piazza del Risorgimento, a 5-minute walk from St. Peter's.

Subway: Take the "A" train (follow the orange signs) and get off at the last stop: Ottaviano - St. Peter's. Look for the Dome!

St. Peter's Hours: 7:00 am to 6:00 pm every day of the year - except that on Wednesday if there is a papal audience at 11:00 am, the Basilica is closed until 12 noon. The Pope usually blesses the crowds at noon on Sundays from a window in his library overlooking St. Peter's Square.

Dress Code: There are young elegantly dressed gentlemen wearing badges at the front entrance of the Basilica who monitor the way you are dressed, so a word to the wise: NO SHORTS FOR MEN OR WOMEN. Your shoulders must be covered which means no spaghetti-strap t-shirts or low cut anything and, of course, no mini skirts.

Vatican Post Office: the Vatican postal system is reputedly fast. They, of course, issue their own, pretty, stamps. There is a post office to the right of St. Peter's Square as you face the Basilica, just behind the colonnade. Remember you cannot post mail with Italian stamps in the Vatican post office nor can you post mail with Vatican stamps in the Italian mail system.

Vatican bus service: The bus runs between St. Peter's Square (Piazza S. Pietro) and the Vatican Museum - leaves from the Vatican Tourist Information Office (in the square) or from the Museum every half hour from 9 am to 2:30 pm.
