Medieval Towers

(Torri Medioevali). Medieval Towers were all the rage from the 7 C to the 13 C. They denoted power. Their height showed the importance of a family. Rome had as many, if not more, than San Gimignano. Now as you discover this layered city, see if you can spot the ones that didn't fall down.

Torre dei Caetani. The remains of a medieval castle belonging originally to the Pierleones. Located on the Tiber Island.

Torre dei Frangipane. (or Torre della Scimmia = monkey). Near Hotel Portoghese in Via dell’Orso - Via dei Portoghesi. A monkey stole a newborn baby and climbed to the top of this tower. But finally the baby was rescued safe and sound.

Torre on Via dei Fagutale. Round tower with a square tower built around it. Still inhabited.

Torre off of Via Cavour in a medieval fabric on stairs called Via S. Francesco di Paola near Church S. Pietro in Vincoli. Next to Vannozza Cattanei's house.

Torre de’ Conti. Built with the detritus and marble at the edge of the Fora di Nerva at the beginning of 13C. It was twice as big until it was semi-destroyed by an earthquake in 14C. On Largo Ricci and Via di Tor de Conti.

Torre del Grillo. Going down Salita del Grillo on right hand side where the arch is.

Torre delle Milizie. Located on Largo Magna Napoli. Largest of the baronial towers built in 13C where now two eagles live.

Two towers are located on Piazza S. Martino ai Monti, up the road towards Via Merulana double towers on either side of the road. Both were erected in the 5C. The tower in the center of the square is freestanding and marks the beginning of the ancient monastery of the Augustines. Across the road another tower built by the same family, Capocci.

Tor di Millina on corner of Via Tor Millina and Via di S. Maria dell'Anima (restored in 1492 and in19C).

Torre of Dante in Palazzo Taverna. A low tower where the authors used to live but which is now an elevator shaft although it is a 13C building. Via degli Orsini.

Torre located at Via Vecchiarelli 37 are vestiges of a medieval tower now incorporated into the Palazzo Vecchiarelli on Via dei Coronari.

Torre degli Anguillara (also called “Casa di Dante”). On the corner of Viale Trastevere and Piazza Sonnino. This was a fortified family castle and the tower, which was much taller, was chopped off 100 years ago as you can see from the bricks on the top.
