The group Italy’s "Sbandieratori dei Rioni di Cori" ( Italy’s "Rioni di Cori" Flagmen) has been showing a very old kind of folklore for 35 years. Its home is the small town of Cori, located roughly 50 kilometers south of Rome; Cori is an ancient town with long-held traditions, and its history goes back several centuries earlier than Rome. Group’s origin is in the Italian Renaissance ( 1500 a.D.): "The ancient art of waving flags". Flags have been part of Cori’s history since the 16th century; mention is made in the Statutes of a representative from Cori "dressed in felt and with a flag" at the Testaccio Games in Rome. In the celebrations of the "Carosello Storico dei Rioni" (Historic Carousel of Quarters), a mystic-scenographic commemoration of the 16th century vow made in 1530 by the Civic Magistrature to carry an offering of candles to the Sanctuary of the Madonna del Soccorso in gratitude for the miracle which saved the inhabitants of Cori from a dreadful plague. The Historical Carousel was first introduced in 1938 and tuscan style flags appear handled personal and unexpected way. The performers in the tournament live in the three quarters (Rioni) of Cori which are named after the gates to the Citadel: Romana, Segnina and Ninfina. This traditional event led to the creation of the folklore group called the Italy’s "Sbandieratori dei Rioni di Cori" in 1966, which bases its performance on historical events and uses specific choreographical techniques.
The Italy’s "Sbandieratori dei Rioni di Cori" were the only original group organized in all of central Italy in 1966: the Cori Town Council awarded them a civic honour. The artists of the group play with coloured flags creating very dynamic and acrobatic choreographies. They wear valuable and varicoloured sixteenth-century-stile costumes and they are accompanied by the "Fanfarra Antiqua" renaissance fanfare which is made of trumpets and drums; the drums and trumpets follow the historical march underlining the flagmen with the sound of their rhythm. A very elegant entertainment event is offered by the flagmen who wave their flag bearing the arms of the town of Cori and its quarters. This event was offered in times of peace as an unic moment or part of a representation whole. The orders were gives by bugles or by flags used as signals to call the warriers to those places where they had to face danger and avoid the defeat. Nowadays all the mouvements and acts done by flagmen hold the same meanings. By the high spectacularity of their representations, the flag wavers still impresse and amaze people of the World. The group Italy’s "Sbandieratori dei Rioni di Cori" was founded in 1966; throughout these years of activity, this group has taken the ancient folklore of the flag with success and professionalism all over the World. |
