The Shroud, an extraordinary and mysterious Relic, has attracted the
interest of the scientists, fascinated by the enigma of the bloody image
impressed on this ancient linen, for over a century.
Numerous meetings and days of study have followed one another over the
course of the years, with the presence of sindonologists from all over
the world.
The extraordinary Exhibition of the Shroud, desired by the Holy Father
to solemnise the event, was officially announced on September 5, 1995 by
Cardinal Giovanni Saldarini, Archbishop of Turin and Custodian of the Shroud,
and will take place during the Great Jubilee of 2000.
On the occasion of the Jubilee and of the Shroud Exhibition, the Worldwide
Congress “SINDONE 2000” one
held in Orvieto - Italy on the following days: August 27-28-29, 2000,
during the Exhibition that takes place in Turin from August 12 to October
22, 2000.
Orvieto seems to be an ideal place because of its historical and cultural
tradition, the presence of the Corporal of Bolsena’s Miracle, its experience
in the organisation and its proximity to Rome along the ways that the ancient
pilgrims covered during the Holy Years.
