Roccella Jonica

The modern town stands on both sides of the SS 106. High up on a hill the grand castle of the Carafa is visible, sorrounded by a little village of ancient houses. According to some, Roccella is built over the ruins of the ancient Amphissa and has prehistoric origins. Today the town has extended along the littoral, developing its own agricultural and tourist activities, but on the heights of the rocky coast, the castle, still remains with the village of simple dwellings well preserved. Worth visiting is a circular tower, rebuilt in the XVI century, the remains of an Angevine castle with its subsequent alteriations, the ruins of a feudal palace (XVIII Century) with a portal of a certain interest. In the Mother Church there is a fine XVI century crucifix. Near the town (S.Onofrio district) there is a necropolis of the 9th-8th century B. C. Roccella is the centre of an interesting production of jasmine essence: along this coast it reaches such a high level as to provide 40% of world production. The jasmine blossoming here lasts 6 months, from May to October.
