Cala Gonone

Cala Gonone stands in the centre of the east coast of Sardinia (Italy), in the enchanting Golfo di Orosei.
It is one of the most characteristic seaside and holiday resort locations on our island.

The village is situated on a well-equipped tourist port, in a gulf which abounds in little beaches and bays, such as Cala Cartoe/Osala, Cala Luna, Cala Sisine, Cala Biriola, Cala Mariolu, Cala Goloritzč.
Some of these bays can be reached by car, or otherwise either on foot, by kayak/canoe, or more commonly by boat using an efficient daily ferry service; it takes from between 15 min. to 1 hour to reach most of them.
The ferry to Cala Luna also carries tourists to the famous Grotta del Bue Marino (Cave of the Sea Ox) just 20 min. away. It is highly reccomended to visit this wild, unpolluted coastline, fringed by so many little bays and inlets, among rocky cliffs fashioned by the elements. Hiring a boat can also offer the freedom of ‘private’ visits to the above mentioned bays and to the coast. And Cala Gonone and it’s environs offer yet more diversions: the area is a paradise for trekkers and especially free-climbers – explore the canyon of Gorropu, the Tiscali cavern, the land trail to Cala Luna. Other activities not to be missed are canoeing, diving and mountain-biking.

Inland, on the outskirts of the village, there are also beautiful caves, like the famous one called “Ispinigoli”. At the bottom of this pit various ancient objects such as driftpins, earrings and bracelets, both of nuragic and punic origin were found.
Indeed, the whole region is very rich in evidence of the nuragic and pre-nuragic civilizations, some remains of which in our sorroundings are dated as far back as 3000-1000 BC. There are “dolmens”, easily reachable either by car and/or on foot, various “domus de janas” (funerary caves dated 3000-2000 BC), the famous nuragic giant’s tomb of “S’Ena ‘e Thomes”, that traces back to 1500-1200 BC. A visit to the remains of the nuragic villages of Serra Orrios and Nuraghe Mannu is essential for the knowledge of the nuragic civilization, with remains of temples, groups of huts and giants’ tombs. From Nuraghe Mannu, in Cala Gonone, you can enjoy an awe-inspiring view of the whole gulf.

We hope you’ll come and see for yourself the delights we have to offer, not least of which is the hospitality of the Sardinian people!
