Monterosso and the Sanctuary of N. S. of Soviore

Monterosso lies down in the wide inlet made up of the stretch of the Cinque Terre’s coast and limited north-west ward by Punta Mesco. The rocky hill of the Capuchins Frairs divides the ancient suburb by the promenade of Fegina.

The parish church dedicated to St. John Baptist, a splendid (wonderful) example of gothic-ligurian style, is placed at the entrance of the suburb. Its facade is decorated with a rose window and typical white marble and green “serpentinite” (a local stone).

In the same little square is the “mortis et orationis” oratory, seat of the “Confraternita dei Neri”. In the middle of the village is the other oratory entitled to Santa Croce, seat of the “Confraternita dei Bianchi”. The most ancient Marian Sanctuary in Liguria, intitled to N. S. of Soviore, rises (stand) above Monterosso.

With the opportunity of the Holy Year, the church and the characteristic guestrooms annexed to the sanctuary have been changed radically so that you can now completely enjoy these spaces, as they have arrived at us along the centuries. Splendid and unique the view you can enjoy from the square of the sanctuary.

The sanctuary of Soviore is a Jubilee Sanctuary. It is possible to obtain the indulgence every day, according to the rules established bythe Catholic Church, while in other sanctuaries it is possible only in Patron’s Day.
