THE MOUNTAIN COMMUNITY OF STILARO-ALLARO

The area of the Mountain Community of Stilaro Allaro still has remarkable evidence of Magna Grecia, the Bizantine period and the Borbon domination.

Every village has many monuments and is sorrounded by beautiful natural features.

BIVONGI – The Byzantine-Norman church of St John Thèristis (12th century) is located 2 kilometres from the village. Its monastery of monks belonging to the Greek Ortodox Church is unique in Italy. Along the river Stilaro one can admire the Marmarico’s Falls, 105 metres high, and many natural beauties.

CAULONIA – It is an ancient feudal town of the noble Carafa family and rich in history, evidenced by the presence of many monuments. To be seen here is the historical centre, the Norman Castle, the Cathedral, the Bizantine fresco. Noteworthy are the religious celebration held at Easter.

PAZZANO – A village of miners founded in the 12th century with mountain rich in iron. On Monte Stella there is a suggestive hermitage with an image of Our Lady located at the botton of a grotto.

PLACANICA – Founded around the year 1000 A.D., it still has the characteristic panorama with a medieval structure around the Castle. To be seen is St. Basilio Magno’s Church and the Monastery of the Dominican Fathers (17th century).The image of Our Lady of the Rock, wich is attended by many of the faithful, to be seen in the hamlet of St. Domenica.

ROCCELLA IONICA – Founded around the year 1000 A.D. on a rock jutting into the sea, it has a ruined Medieval Castle (11th century) and the Sanctuary of Our Lady of Grace (16th century). Some international events, such as the Jazz Festival and a Cinema Review, are held every year in a well-located concert/event facility near the Medieval castle. Roccella also has a very modern and well-equipped marina.

STILO – A birthplace of Tommaso Campanella (1568-1639), a philosopher, political theorist and critic. It has a beautiful historical centre and many examples of Byzantine (such as the Cattolica), Medieval and Baroque art. The Easter Festival is also of interest.

Typical products: wine, Christmas and Easter cakes, wood sculptures , embroidery work.

Local cuisine: homemade pasta with pork or goat in ragù sauce.
