L’Associazione “Chamber Music - Trio di Trieste” si è costituita a Duino (Trieste) con atto notarile del 14 novembre 1995: un atto formale che sanciva l’esistenza di un gruppo di cinque persone riunitesi per dare vita ad un’entità operativa che, con l’organizzazione di manifestazioni musicali, perpetui nel tempo il nome, renda omaggio all’attività prestigiosa e alla raffinata concezione cameristica del Trio di Trieste.
Tali attività si concretizzarono innanzitutto, e come prima iniziativa, nel far nascere a Trieste un CONCORSO INTERNAZIONALE PER COMPLESSI DA CAMERA con PIANOFORTE “PREMIO TRIO DI TRIESTE”.
Il gruppo fondatore è stato formato dai professori: Benedetto de Bernard (Presidente dell’Associazione), Tullio Corzani (Vice Presidente), Fedra Florit (Segretario Generale e Tesoriere), Vittorio Giammusso e Mario Pines, ai quali si sono aggiunti - con delibera assembleare del 25 novembre 1996 - Maureen Jones, Martha Nardi, Fernanda Selvaggio e Sergio Cimarosti.
Attualmente l’Associazione ha sede a Trieste, in via Mazzini 12, e il Comitato Esecutivo è così composto: Vladimiro Dolgan (Presidente), Giorgio Ribotta (Vice Presidente), Maureen Jones (Segretario Generale), Mariella De Francesco (Tesoriere), Giampaolo de Ferra, Ettore Campailla e Michele Lacalamita.
Nel settembre 2001 la Regione Autonoma Friuli-Venezia Giulia (con decreto n.0336/Pres.) ha concesso l’approvazione dello Statuto ed il riconoscimento della personalità giuridica all’Associazione Chamber Music - Trio di Trieste.
Il Comitato Esecutivo, che gestisce le iniziative, è sostenuto dall’apporto dei soci ordinari, benemeriti e sostenitori, secondo quanto prospettato dallo Statuto dell’Associazione. Secondo normativa, per l’approvazione del preventivo e del bilancio consuntivo è convocata annualmente l’Assemblea dei Soci.
La direzione artistica di ogni manifestazione è affidata a Fedra Florit, pianista, allieva del Trio di Trieste, critico musicale e docente di Musica da Camera.
L’idea di istituire un Concorso che si modelli sull’attività e sui criteri interpretativi del Trio di Trieste nasce da un’iniziativa della prof.ssa Florit che, assieme ai Maestri del Trio di Trieste, ha scelto di anno in anno i nomi per la prestigiosa giuria e definito con precisione il repertorio da affrontarsi nelle tre prove eliminatorie previste dal regolamento del Concorso.
La giuria prevede la presenza costante di Dario De Rosa, il pianista del Trio di Trieste, quale presidente non votante.
Dalla prima edizione del Concorso (1996) all’ultima (2003), si sono iscritte 341 formazioni cameristiche (per un totale di ben 709 musicisti) dal duo al quintetto, provenienti da 25 Paesi del mondo.
A giudicare i giovani musicisti si sono alternati i nomi più prestigiosi del panorama musicale internazionale (tra essi: Franco Gulli, Boris Bekhterev, Piero Farulli, Alexander Lonquich, Aldo Ciccolini, Franco Rossi, Konstantin Bogino, Peter Maag, Viktor Pikayzen, Norbert Brainin, Koichiro Harada, François-Joël Thiollier, solo per citarne alcuni).
Il Concorso Internazionale per complessi da camera con pianoforte "Premio Trio di Trieste" si propone di evidenziare il lavoro cameristico di quei gruppi che, per mentalità e gusto, seguono criteri cameristici affini a quelli che hanno condotto il Trio di Trieste ai vertici mondiali in più di sessant'anni d'attività cameristica e didattica. Quindi, formazioni stabili, lettura attenta della partitura, fusione tra pianoforte e archi, nettezza di fraseggio e determinatezza critica ed autocritica, tali da affinare i risultati nel tempo.
La scelta del tipo di formazioni (unicamente per pianoforte e archi, dal duo al quintetto) vuole ricordare il repertorio più amato ed eseguito dal Trio di Trieste, ma anche limitare il giudizio delle giurie internazionali, che di anno in anno si susseguono, al "settore" più importante della cameristica.
Il Premio Trio di Trieste ha ormai consolidato la propria fama ed il prestigio, tanto da essere considerato, sia dalla stampa specializzata che dagli esperti del settore, uno dei maggiori concorsi a livello internazionale.
Vincere il Premio Trio di Trieste (che mette in palio, oltre al premio in denaro, più di venti importantissimi concerti in Italia ed all’estero, oltre all’incisione di un CD, distribuito da Cd Classics), vuol dire raggiungere un obiettivo prestigioso che può fungere da trampolino di lancio per una seria carriera concertistica.
Tutti i vincitori delle passate edizioni, e cioè il Trio Debussy (Italia, 1997), il Duo Triendl-Berg (Germania, 1998), il Duo Almonte-Tsunoda (Australia-Giappone, 1999), il Duo Downes (Stati Uniti, 2000), l’Ars Trio (Italia, 2001), ed il Tal Trio (Israele, 2002) hanno proseguito con grande successo le loro carriere e sono oggi tra i giovani complessi cameristici più richiesti ed affermati sulla scena internazionale.

Evidenziamo qui di seguito le novità relative all’ultima edizione, svoltasi nel maggio 2003.
Tre i premi in palio: 15.000,00 Euro (offerti dal Comune di Trieste), la registrazione di un CD e una serie di importanti concerti in Italia e all'estero, per il complesso 1° classificato; 7.000,00 Euro per il 2° complesso classificato (offerti dalla Provincia di Trieste) e 5.000,00 Euro per il 3° (con il contributo di Banca di Cividale).
Ai Premiati sarà riservata in futuro un’occasione nell’ambito della programmazione concertistica a Trieste e un inserimento nella programmazione della Fondazione Regionale per lo Spettacolo del Friuli-Venezia Giulia.
Quattro i Premi Speciali usualmente proposti dal Concorso, per un totale di 9.500,00 Euro. Da segnalare in particolare il Premio Speciale In.c.e. che, dal 2002 contribuisce anche a sostenere le spese di iscrizione e di alloggio per quelle formazioni che - con esclusione degli italiani, austriaci e sloveni - provengono da uno dei 17 Paesi appartenenti all’Iniziativa Centro Europea, concorrenti che prima di questo intervento si erano spesso dichiarati impossibilitati a partecipare per motivi di mero carattere economico.
Importantissima novità per l’edizione 2003 è stato il numero dei membri della Giuria, che passa da sette a nove componenti, a sottolineare il sempre maggior prestigio della manifestazione. La Giuria del Concorso 2003 era così composta: Hatto Beyerle (Austria), Dmitri Bashkirov (Russia), Bruno Canino (Italia), Pietro Borgonovo (Italia), Marianne Chen (U.S.A.), Irwin Gage (U.S.A.), Crtomir Siskovic (Slovenia), Zlatko Stahuljak (Croazia), Francesco Strano (Italia). Ad essi si affiancano Renato Zanettovich (Italia), quale membro non votante in rappresentanza del Trio di Trieste, e Dario De Rosa, nel ruolo fisso di Presidente non votante.
Inoltre quest’anno il Concorso “Premio Trio di Trieste” si è per la prima volta interamente svolto nella splendida sede del Teatro Comunale “Giuseppe Verdi”. La serata finale è stata registrata da RAI-Radio 3 e da Telequattro e presentata da Maria Giovanna Elmi.
La Giuria 2003 ha ritenuto di non assegnare il 1° Premio, nonostante l’alta qualità dei partecipanti. Il Concerto dei Premiati, affollatissimo, ne è stata la prova. Sono state eseguite pagine di Bartók, Beethoven, Schumann e Schubert. Acclamazioni calorosissime per i due Duo classificatisi al secondo posto ex aequo (Duo Asuka-Yuko, giapponesi, pianoforte e violino – Duo Brakhman-Grishin, russi, pianoforte e viola) e per l’Esart Trio Berlin (Germania) aggiudicatosi il terzo premio.
Relativamente ai Premi Speciali, il Premio In.C.E. e il Premio Rotary Club Trieste Nord sono andati al Duo ungherese Ro-Ma, mentre il Premio Amedeo Baldovino (per la migliore esecuzione di Schubert) al Duo Asuka-Yuko. Non assegnato il Premio Speciale legato al nome del violoncellista Libero Lana.
Il Duo Asuka-Yuko ed il Duo Brakhman-Grishin si sono esibiti poi il 26 maggio al Teatro Nuovo “Giovanni da Udine” di Udine, eseguendo con trasporto e gusto pagine di Schumann, Hindemith, Beethoven e Schubert. Anche qui notevole il successo (con bis) e ovazioni a non finire, a conferma di un rapporto importante e consolidato con il pubblico udinese.
Il Concorso è inserito nella Federazione Mondiale dei Concorsi Internazionali di Ginevra; si svolge nel mese di maggio, con il contributo del Ministero dei Beni e delle Attività Culturali - Direzione Generale per lo Spettacolo dal vivo di Roma, della Regione Friuli-Venezia Giulia, della Provincia di Trieste e del Comune di Trieste, e grazie alle sponsorizzazioni della Fondazione CRTrieste, di Assicurazioni Generali, della Camera di Commercio di Trieste e della Banca di Cividale.
Dal 2003 il Premio Trio di Trieste diverrà biennale; la prossima edizione si terrà quindi nel maggio 2005, intervallata, nel 2004, da un grande FESTIVAL dei Vincitori (a Trieste ed in Regione Friuli-Venezia Giulia), ideato quale momento di verifica del lavoro finora svolto e della “crescita” realizzata dai complessi nel tempo. La sede del Festival sarà il Teatro “G.Verdi” a Trieste e verrà poi replicato in Regione nella giornata successiva.
Tale Festival va ad integrare un’attività concertistica già avviata dall’Associazione (autonomamente e quale collaborazione con altre società concertistiche) sotto il titolo di PREMIATISSIMI, per riportare in Regione Friuli-Venezia Giulia i premiati al Concorso triestino ed alcuni selezionatissimi vincitori di altri concorsi internazionali, inseriti nella Federazione Mondiale dei Concorsi di Ginevra.

The “Chamber Music - Trio di Trieste” Association was established in Duino, Trieste, by a notarial deed dated 14 November 1995 and formalizing the existence of a group of five people gathered to give birth to an operational entity, which, with the organization of musical events, might preserve and pay homage to the outstanding activity and sophisticated interpretation of chamber music by the Trio di Trieste musical ensemble.
The first initiative to bring forth the objectives of the association was the “PREMIO TRIO DI TRIESTE” - INTERNATIONAL COMPETITION FOR CHAMBER MUSIC ENSEMBLES WITH PIANO.
The founding group was composed of the following: Prof. Benedetto de Bernard, as the President of the Association, Prof. Tullio Corzani, as the Vice-President, Prof. Fedra Florit, as the Secretary and Treasurer, Prof. Vittorio Giammusso and Prof. Mario Pines. By a deliberation of the association made on 25 November 1996, Maureen Jones, Martha Nardi, Fernanda Selvaggio and Sergio Cimarosti were also included in the group.
At this time, the Association’s main office is situated in Trieste, Via Mazzini 12, and the Executive Committee is composed of the following: Vladimiro Dolgan (President), Giorgio Ribotta (Vice-President), Maureen Jones (Secretary), Mariella De Francesco (Treasurer), Giampaolo de Ferra, Ettore Campailla and Michele Lacalamita.

In September 2001, the Friuli-Venezia Giulia Autonomous Region, by Presidential Decree No. 0336, approved the Articles of Association of the “Chamber Music - Trio di Trieste” Association and recognized its juridical personality.

The Executive Committee is supported in the organization of the various events by regular, meritorious and contributing members, according to the guidelines set out in the Articles of Association. According to the law, a meeting of the members of the association shall be called every year for the approval of the budget plan and final financial statement.

Fedra Florit is the Artistic Director for all events. She is a pianist, music critic, teacher of chamber music and former student of the Trio di Trieste ensemble.
The idea of establishing a competition shaped after the activity and interpretation criteria of the Trio di Trieste ensemble stemmed from an initiative promoted by Prof. Fedra Florit, who, together with the Trio di Trieste masters, has selected every year the members of the prestigious jury and meticulously defined the repertoire to be executed during the three preliminary heats indicated in the rules of the competition. According to such rules, Dario De Rosa, the pianist of the Trio di Trieste ensemble, shall always be included in the jury, as the non-voting President.
From its first edition in 1996 to its latest in 2003, 341 chamber ensembles have enrolled in the competition, with a total of 709 musicians, ranging from duos to quintets and coming from 25 countries in the world.
For the evaluation of such young musicians, the most prestigious names of the international musical arena have been selected as the jury, such as Franco Gulli, Boris Bekhterev, Piero Farulli, Alexander Lonquich, Aldo Ciccolini, Franco Rossi, Konstantin Bogino, Peter Maag, Viktor Pikayzen, Norbert Brainin, Koichiro Harada, Francois-Joel Thiollier, just to name a few.

The purpose of the “Premio Trio di Trieste” - International Competition for Chamber Music Ensembles with Piano is to support the chamber music work carried out by those ensembles who, by mentality and musical taste, follow chamber criteria similar to those that have brought the Trio di Trieste ensemble to the apex of world fame in more than sixty years of teaching activities and musical performance. These are: stable formations, punctilious reading of musical scores, fusion between strings and piano, phrasing precision, self-criticism and ability to accept criticism so that performance may be improved over time.
The selection of a specific type of formation – exclusively strings and piano ensembles are admitted, from duos to quintets – wishes to emulate the repertoire that the Trio di Trieste ensemble most loved and followed, but also to limit the area of competence of the international juries, which each year follow one another in the competition, to the most important chamber music “sector”.

The fame and prestige of the “Trio di Trieste Music Award” are now so much established that it is considered both by specialized press and sector experts one of the major competitions at an international level.
Winning the “Trio di Trieste Music Award” – which, besides a monetary prize, also offers more than twenty prestigious concerts in Italy and abroad, together with the recording of a CD, distributed by CD Classics – means to achieve an ambitious goal that may serve as a stepping stone on the path to a prestigious concert career.
All winners of the past editions - the Debussy Trio (Italy, 1997), the Triendl-Berg Duo (Germany, 1998), the Almonte-Tsunoda Duo (Australia and Japan, 1999), the Downes Duo (United States, 2000), the Ars Trio (Italy, 2001) and the Tal Trio (Israel, 2002) - have carried on successful careers and today are listed among the most acclaimed young chamber ensembles, in greatest demand on the stage of international music performance.

The following are the new features of the last edition of the competition, which was held in May 2003.
Three prizes were offered: Euro 15,000.00, offered by the City of Trieste, the recording of a CD and a series of prestigious concerts in Italy and abroad to the first-ranking ensemble; Euro 7,000.00 offered by the Province of Trieste to the second-ranking ensemble; Euro 5,000.00 to the third-ranking ensemble with the contribution of Banca di Cividale.
Winners shall have the opportunity to perform during the concert season in Trieste and be included in the program of the Regional Foundation for Entertainment of Friuli-Venezia Giulia.
Four special prizes have been granted in the total amount of Euro 9,500.00. Particularly noteworthy is the special prize offered by In.C.E. (Central European Initiative), an organization that starting the 2002 edition has also covered the subscription fees and accommodation costs of those ensembles coming from one of the 17 countries belonging to the organization – except Italy, Austria and Slovenia – since prospective participants from these countries in the past had repeatedly denied the invitation to enroll due to mere economic reasons.
A further new feature of the 2003 edition will be the addition of two members to the jury, which therefore shall be composed of a total of 9 jurors, in the intent to stress the ever-growing prestige of the competition. The 2003 Jury will be composed of the following: Hatto Beyerle (Austria), Dmitri Bashkirov (Russia), Bruno Canino (Italy), Pietro Borgonovo (Italy), Marianne Chen (U.S.A.), Irwin Gage (U.S.A.), Crtomir Siskovic (Slovenia), Zlatko Stahuljak (Croatia), Francesco Strano (Italy). These will be joined by Renato Zanetovich (Italy), as a non-voting member representing the Trio di Trieste ensemble, and Dario De Rosa, as the non-voting President for life.
Moreover, this year the “Premio Trio di Trieste” was held for the first time for its entire duration in the magnificent palace of the “G. Verdi” City Theatre. The closing concert was recorded by the Italian National Broadcast Radio 3 and the local TV broadcast Telequattro and hosted by Maria Giovanna Elmi.
The jury of the 2003 edition decided not to award the first prize, despite the high quality of all participants, a fact proven to be true at the Winners Concert. At the concert, musical scores by Bartók, Beethoven, Schumann and Schubert have been performed and both Duos ranking second (Asuka-Yuko Duo, Japan, piano and violin – Brakhman-Grishin Duo, Russia, piano and viola) and the third-ranking Esart Trio Berlin (Germany) received enthusiastic ovations from the audience.
As for special prizes, the In.C.E. Prize and the Rotary Club Prize have both been awarded to the Hungarian Ro-Ma Duo, while the Amedeo Baldovino Prize for the best Schubert performance has been awarded to the Asuka-Yuko Duo. Special Prize Libero Lana, the famous cellist, has not been awarded.
The Asuka-Yuko Duo and the Brakhman-Grishin Duo have then played on May 26 at the Teatro Nuovo Giovanni da Udine in Udine, performing with passion and good taste scores by Schumann, Hindemith, Beethoven and Schubert. Also on this occasion, success was resounding, with the audience asking for an encore, a fact that confirms the existence of a strong and long-lasting relationship with the Udine public.

The Competition is listed in the World Federation of International Music Competitions of Geneva and takes place in the month of May with the contribution of the Ministry of Cultural Assets, Directorate General for Live Entertainment, Rome, the Friuli-Venezia Giulia Region, the Province and the City of Trieste and thanks to the sponsorships granted by CRTrieste Foundation, Assicurazioni Generali and the Chamber of Commerce of Trieste.

Starting 2003, the competition will be held biannually. The next edition, therefore, will be held in 2005, preceded in 2004 by the Grand Winners Festival, which will take place in Trieste and in the Friuli-Venezia Giulia region. The Festival has been thought as an opportunity to assess the work carried out to this day and to monitor the “growth” of the winning ensembles over time. The Festival will be held at the Verdi Theatre in Trieste and then performed again in the region the following day.

Such Festival completes a concert activity previously started by the Association - autonomously and in cooperation with other concert associations - called PREMIATISSIMI, which brings back to the Friuli-Venezia Giulia the awarded musicians and some carefully selected winners from other international competitions, listed in World Federation of International Music Competitions in Geneva.
