The
appearance of the HOLY FACE |
The “Holy Face” is a thin
veil. As it is between two glasses, it has not been subjected to any
scientific researches to detemine the kind of cloth.
|
|
The
horizontal threads of the fabric are rather wavy and the structure
of the material is simple, so the warp and the weft interlace in a
simple way as in a normal weaving.
The cloth measures cm 17 X 24.
It is the image of a man with long hair and the beard divided into
sides. The fabric is so thin that the image is visible before and
behind. If we put a newspaper behind the image, we can read it even
at a distance. its colour is a shade of brown, the lips are light
red and seem to annul every material aspect. May not be found
residuals of colours.
The cheeks are dissimilar: the first , rounder than the other,
appears cosiderably inflated. |
The
eyes look very intensely towards one side and upwards so we can see
the white of the eye under the iris. The
pupils are completely open, but in an irregular way. In the middle,
on the forehead, is a forelock of short, wavy hair. The beard, not
much developed, is divided into two sides. |
"....
Simon Peter came .... and went into the tomb; he saw the
linen cloths* lying, and the napkin** which had been on his
head, not lying with the linen cloths but rolled up in a
place by itself".
(John
20,6-7)
*”Othonia” – the
Holy Shroud of Turin, well known all over the world; placed
one upon another, this Image and the Veil of Monoppello fit
together perfectly.
**”Soudarion” – the
Holy Face of Manoppello, venerated in times past in Rome and
named Veronica” (vera icona – true icon). |
