Cyprus in the Middle Ages

The osteological material from the excavation of Nea Paphos - Garrison’s Camp, now in  study, is particularly interesting as concerning some phases of Cyprus history which are not well known from the point of view of the archaeozoological research, regarding a long period from the Hellenistic phase to the Middle age. The interest is given by the great deal of material available for the study and also by the long chronological period, which allow us to observe the variations in the economy and traditions. Since these remains come from areas of different use, from private houses, cultual buildings and workshops, the possibilities in the interpretation of the data, to reconstruct the human activities during the times, increase. The consistence of materials and the preservation of the bone are variable in the different sectors, and only preliminar data from the basilica area (end IVth to beginning Vth centuries) and from medieval levels, are now available. The material from the late-medieval levels, may be attributed to kitchen waste in smallest quantity only, meanwhile most of it consists of the remnants of a workshop for the needle production.
