trying to find ANYTHING on K.S.

Comments:

It's hard being a new fan of Kendra's! I heard "The Only Stars are in Your Eyes" on the local public-supported (read: good) radio station here in Seattle, and have been trying to find her stuff ever since. I recently saw her (only) solo album on Amazon, but there seems to be a dearth of both info and material about Kendra. If anyone here ever speaks to her (I saw that her brother posted a message here...) let her know that her music is still reaching new souls, and we want more!

Comments:

Great site here...I actually came across it quite a while back but forgot about it and had to search quite a bit before I found it again. Excellent discography and scans! First heard Kendra on her solo album, then went backwards, Dream Syndicate and Opal and Guild of Temporal Adventurers. I've got her to thank for introducing me to Richard and Mimi Fariña Right now am listening to Early Recordings....divine stuff. The video for Empty Box Blues is over at launch.yahoo.com, just saw it a few days ago and was reminded of what a wonderful thing Ms. Smith's voice is.....anyway all the best from Singapore.

Harriet Brown was the pseudonym used by Greta Garbo at various times when travelling incognito...or so I heard. And yes we hope Kendra will record again. There is something so unique about her songs and voice. The Early Recordings with Opal are so natural and yet...

I was just listening to Rainy Day and came in the other room to see if she was anywhere on the Web. I can probably say that of all the zillions of record and things I've listened to in 35 years of doing little but that, her version of "Flying on the Ground" on that record is simply my favorite song. That's it.

Hi Kendra, I was friends with you and the rest of the Suspects back in the Davis days. I played keyboards in a new wave band from Sacramento called Permanent Wave, then The Mumbles. I understand you might live not too far from here--it would be fun to hear from you. I have no idea whether you log in here or even have a computer (last I heard you didn't have any electricity where you live), but if you do, drop me a line. Dane

Talk about a blast from the past... I remember having the hots for her back in the days when we were both in Davis. I used to work the stage crew at the Coffee House and other venues. My roomate, Peter Wadhams, knew Kendra pretty well and I would bump into her here and there. We never got to talking much, she seemed to be a very busy person, but I remember finding her very attractive in those days. Those were strange times. It is odd to run into someone on the net with whom I was acquainted so long ago. I wonder what she's like at 40. I hope life's been good to her.

Forgot to add. For the best interview with Kendra see Andrea Juno's book "Angry Women in Rock" (vol.1) ... A.J. was co-editor of the REsearch book series and went on to publish her own JUNO books; don't know how many different titles. This interview is one of the longest, most complete, most recent and with collaboration with Kendra, making it more accurate and less speculative than other interviews. (Interview dates around 1995?)

I can vouch that Kendra is alive and well and seems to have found the fountain of youth. Don't know if she will record for public consumption any time soon... at present she is obsessed with Persian classical music and music from Central Asia and is devoting herself to learning this amazing brain expanding music which requires immense amounts of memorization and concentration -- to the extent that she refuses to listen to anything else. Those of you who saw her at Terrastock saw the beginning of this "obsession" when she brought on stage the instrument made by her friend "uberman" which closely resembles the persian "tar" in sound and set up. Thank you for this website -- she so rarely interfaces with those who love her music -- I think it means something for her to see that her "fans" have such depth of insight and caring. PS :Kurt Davis you werre on the right track looking up "maggot" in the dictionary ... it's older meaning does apply to the song on 5 Ways of Disappearing.

It's been a while since I've been back and it was great to see some more articles posted since my last visit. I guess I just wanted to say that time passing doesnt diminish my appreciation of Kendra's music, quite the contrary actually. It's nice to see her brother, friends and musicians that have played with her visit here too...maybe they can let her know we're waiting to hear anything that becomes available.

I have all of Kendra's Dream syndicate and Opal stuff but I can't find Five Ways of Disappearing on any web stores (CDNOW, CDPOINT etc.) or at any of my cool independent local CD stores in Pittsburgh. It must be out of print. Any suggestions? I'd like to buy it but I'll resort to mp3s.

Thanks for loving KS enough to create and maintain a webpage!! I thought i was the only one! Anyone ever hear the "Rainy Day" album released by Rough Trade US? It's never mentioned in discussions about KS or Opal. Do I have the only copy in the world? Anyhow, Where the hell is she? 5 ways of disappearing? seems like the one she chose was quite effective? My greatest regret was staying home the night that Opal played in DC at the old 9:30. Thanks for this forum!!

First of all- yes, the Dutch review of 'Guild of Temporary Adventurers' (great bandname) is favourable, although it's more of an interview- too bad Kendra wants to stay on her farm! Wouldn't mind to see her live with a small band, performing Earth Same Breath or puttin' the boots into Bold Marauder! Keep up the work, buddy, don't let Kendra disappear altogether!

Well anyway i'd drive there and pick her up or something, if i had to, it'd be worth it.
