Casacalenda is
a little village in the centre of the Molise region. It has the caracteristic shape of
a cross and it is situated on the hilltop (650 a.s.l.) where its possible to have a
delightful view of the surrounding mountains and valleys.
In the front of the village there is Casale wood which includes LIPU
oasis (Italian League Birds Protection) populated by birds of prey and several
species of butterflies and archides.
The medioeval historical centre, where the stately Dual Palace rises, is
called Terravecchia, and it is well preserved: the old walls and one of the
two gates Porta Capo which permitted to enter in the ancient e, are
still visible.
In terravecchia its possible to admire the eighteenth-century paintings
placed in S. Maria Maggiore Church to visit the Ancient furnace
and the Duke fountain situated next to Addolorata Church.
Recently some works of contemporary art risen near the historical monuments creating a
connexion between the local culture and the new artistic languages.
Out of the village there are two important holy places: S. Onofrio
convent(1407) and Difesa Sanctuary (1896), built in lonely and silent
places.
