The traning course for school librarians called Cremisi ( creation of multimedia libraries for the introduction of Information Society) has been characterized by the use of a 3D virtual environment. In this space the online tutors have created an online library with all the printed and Web resources for the community of learners. The role of the new librarians is undergoing a radical change, because now they are now asked not only to catalogue the printed books available inside the library, but also to be proficient in the use of CDRom and Internet in order to be able to suggest how to access digital data.

It has also been used to encourage the interaction among trainers and among these and the tutors. Grazia Cesarini and Maurizio Bracardi, that have designed and implemented the activities on Active Worlds discuss the difficulties they have faced, the attitude of the trainers and the results of the course.
