The Tour Choir on the steps of the Basilica of Santa Maria Maggiore in Rome

Basilica Santa Maria Maggiore, Rome

-----------------------------------

Here are some reminiscences of the European Tour by Kerrie Sadler. Many thanks to Kerrie for allowing us to reprint them here:

Snapshot: "A small, cramped stage on a hot summer night, inside an ancient Medici villa on the outskirts of Florence, Italy. The men and women of Los Robles Master Chorale, dressed in formal singing attire, are intermingled with the folk-costumed Cantantutti Cantanch'io Choir. It's unbearably warm, but there are smiles all around as the two groups sing "Santa Lucia" together in Italian to end their joint concert. The audience rises to its feet in an enthusiastic standing ovation.

Snapshot: Evening Mass inside the grand Duomo di Santa Maria del Fiore, Florence, Italy's famous cathedral. The Los Robles Master Chorale is providing music for the Mass: Tomas Victoria's beautiful Ave Maria, Palestrina's Alma Redemptoris Mater, and our own Assistant Conductor Wilbur Skeels's Missa Brevis Terra Nova, which was especially commissioned for this tour. Voices reach heavenward under the arch of the famed dome, and, once hushed, continue to echo for a full ten seconds throughout the cathedral. A magical moment!

Snapshot: A restaurant outside of Rome, in the quaint village of Anguillara Sabizia on Lake Bracciano. A Saturday night concert has just taken place at the village church there, featuring the Los Robles Master Chorale and the Roman choir, "Ronde." Now, following a treacherous-but-lovely walk down a steep and narrow cobblestone street, Ronde is treating the Los Robles singers to dinner. The wine flows, and conversation, in broken English and Italian, is earnest and lively. After dinner the singers of Ronde gather and begin singing again with broad smiles. Who'd imagine that of all songs they could sing, they'd perform the American jazz tune, "Java Jive," in perfect English? Some Los Robles singers who also know the song jump up to join them, and the impromptu song ends with laughter and hugs all around.

So it was on the just completed Fifth International Tour of Ventura County's Los Robles Master Chorale. The world indeed became a smaller place. From June 27 to July 11, 38 singers and 22 spouses and friends toured Italy and Croatia, demonstating American spirit and goodwill through concerts and Masses in Rome, Florence, Venice and in Opatija, Croatia. And much goodwill was returned. At each and every location, the chorale was met by fellow singers proud to share their music and eager to show the Los Robles chorale European hospitality. Gifts ranging from roses for the ladies in Rome, to straw hats and fedoras in Florence, to local books and miniature statues in Opatija, were laden upon the Los Robles singers. In the small resort town of Opatija, on the Adriatic Sea, a banner hung over its main street (Marshall Tito Boulevard), officially welcoming the Los Robles Master Chorale of Moorpark, California!

In Rome, Florence, and Opatija, joint concerts took place with local choirs, proving that music really is a universal language. Each choir sang its own music separately - Los Robles performing a combination of American and European sacred pieces, American classics by composers such as Aaron Copland and Samuel Barber, and American folk songs and spirituals. Then the choirs combined voices to sing the American musical classic, It's A Grand Night For Singing by Richard Rogers, as well as local favorites such as Italy's Santa Lucia, or Croatia's version of Amazing Grace, Milost. Each time, that's when the magic occurred and the room filled with mutual respect, admiration and understanding."

The following e-mail message was received from the LRMC Assistant Director, Wilbur Skeels, who, with his wife Dee, a singer with LRMC, extended their trip to include visits to Germany, Switzerland and Spain:

July 16, Munich

"Hello David,

We just returned from a wonderful day with Franz Biebl and his family. We had a 3-hour lunch at a Greek restaurant near the Senior Home where he is a resident and thoroughly enjoyed one another's company. We played for him the CD of the Missa Brevis recorded at CLU and he was so delighted, and very complimentary to the singers for their choral sound. He is amazingly well for a stroke survivor going on 95 years old!
We also told him that we had heard his "Ave Maria" sung at the Vatican (before the Pope), and at the Duomo in Florence. He was very pleased!

From here we go tomorrow to Switzerland and Spain. I'm looking forward to driving the Alps!

Greetings to Mary Pat."
