Research Activity and Scientific Production
The research activity of dr. L. Vittozzi developed initially in the Biological Chemistry Laboratory of ISS with studies of the genetics and enzymology of wheat seed proteins. When dr. Vittozzi joined the newly established Toxicology Department of ISS, his studies were addressed to the characterisation of xenobiotics-metabolizing enzymes in mammals and fish; subsequently he dealt with the metabolism and mechanisms of toxicity of chloroform (as a model of non-genotoxic carcinogenic halogenated hydrocarbons) in mammals and human tissues and of organophosphate pesticides in fish. More recently, the experimental activity of dr. Vittozzi has been also devoted to the applications of mechanistic/metabolic studies to risk assessment, including species- and dose-extrapolations as well as individual susceptibility factors with both organophosphate pesticides and chloroform. Such activity involved both in vitro and in vivo studies.

The scientific production can be summarized as follows:

  • 52 publications on International peer-reviewed journals
  • 1 IPCS (WHO) Monograph (Co-author and Vice-chairman of the Working Group) (1992)
  • A prototype of a Database on the toxicological and environmental properties of pesticides (PESTINFO)
  • 10 publications on National journals
  • 1 Book (in Italian)

  • Professional Expertise
    Participation of dr. Vittozzi in National and International Committees and Scientific Organisations dates back to 1981; since 1986 such activity  has become more and more predominant over experimental research. Major aspects of such activity were:
    ? participation in several International (and National) Committees, aimed at
    ? the toxicological assessment of different kinds of chemicals
    ? updating guidelines for toxicity and ecotoxicity testing, and setting strategies for the classification of chemicals and for environmental risk assessment;
    ? funding research projects and fellowships in toxicology and ecotoxicology;
    ? participation in networks for the design and implementation of toxicological and ecotoxicological databases on chemically-defined flavourings (EU Network), food plant toxicants (EU Network), and pesticides (National project).
    ? Inspections to Toxicology Testing Laboratories aimed to the EU-recognized Certification of compliance to the OECD Principles of Good Laboratory Practice (for the International acceptance of toxicity test results)
