About Java, JRE and related stuff
If you are a Windows 9x/NT or Solaris user, you can download JRE for
free from Sun
website; otherwise, you can find the site from which you can download
the JRE for your system by clicking here
.
A possible alternative to the JRE is the Java Development Kit (JDK);
it is much more than what you need to run Jally (this is a set of tools
to develop Java programs, while you only need to execute one), but some
platforms do not have a JRE available yet, so JDK (Version 1.1.5 or higher)
is the only option.
Once installed the JRE/JDK, if you are a Windows or Solaris user
you can try HotSpot (download it from here):
this is a free plug-in for the JRE/JDK which increases its performances
in the execution of Java programs; if it does not do much to improve Jally
performances, it can still be useful for other Java programs which you
could wish to install in the future.
A final hint: JRE (or JDK) are BIG bundles to download (some megabytes!),
so before causing your modem to melt you could ask your friends, maybe
they have a copy to lend you for installation (as JRE and JDK are free,
it is perfectly legal to copy and share their installation files); if your
friends are no help, you can check computer magazines: many of them are
distributed with CD-ROMs, and in one of these CD-ROMs you could find just
what you're looking for (this is not unlikely, so have a try!).
