Rimini

Rimini has two alive and beating hearts: the city centre with its quarters and the seaside, 15km of beaches, divided into 10 localities (Torre Pedrera, Viserbella, Viserba, Rivabella, San Giuliano, Rimini Marina centro, Bellariva, Marebello, Rivazzurra e Miramare). The centre is the historical soul of the city, the area where the principle monuments are located (Arco D’Augusto 27 a. C., Ponte di Tiberio 14-21 d. C., Castel Sismondo e il Tempio Malatestiano di Leon Battista Alberti XV sec.) and where interesting itineraries tracing the local history may be planned.

Santarcangelo di Romagna (Dist. 9 Km)

The medieval village is concentrated its beautiful fortress which can be reached by ascending along the tiny streets that open onto wide panoramas of the Riviera below.

The hill underlying Santarcangelo hides the mystery of the more than 200 caves dug into the limestone ; enchanting hypogea, the origins of which are still practically unknown.

San Michele Parish Church, with its rectangular plan and round apse, its only distance away from the centre. In Poggio Berni the Moroni water mill, in the locality of Sant'Andrea, is worth a visit.

Rep. di San Marino (Dist. 28 Km, 760 m above sea level)

According to historical tradition the ancient Rep. of San Marino was founded by a Dalmation stone-cutter, Marinus, who had been commissioned by Diocletian to restore the city walls of Rimini. Marinus and his collegue and friend Leone were Christians and, in order to escape the Emperor's persecution, one took refuge on Mount Feretrio and the other on Mount Titano. Marinus is described in a 10th century manuscript as the "libertatis fundator" of the tiny Republic.

In fact, San Marino's land area measures 61 square kilometres.

Valconca (Dist. 30 Km)

As we take a look at the villages in the Conca Valley we mary begin with the first, only 4 km from the sea: San Giovanni in Marignano, known as the "Malatesta Granary" because of its fertile land. By going up into the undulating hills that flank the River Conca one reaches Saludecio, a villagge enclosed by its surrounding walls and accessible through two 14th century gateways. In Mondaino the beautiful Piazza Maggiore, with its arches, is the pride of the village together with the Paleontologic Museum which has a wealth of fossils found i the Conca Valley area. Montefiore is dominated by the imposing fortress which looks out over the Riviera.

Cesena (Dist. 30 Km)

Before crossing the Savio the Via Emilia goes round Garampo Hill and the fortress that dominates it, almost as trough it were keeping watch over Romagna. The historical city centre of Cesena, surrounded by 15th century city walls, shows evident traces of the Malatesta family's Humanism. Worth a visit are the Malatesta Library and the Museum of Peasant Civilisation and, ascending along Via delle Scalette, the Sanctuary of the Virgin of the Mount.

San Leo (Dist. 32 Km, 630 m above sea level )

S. Leo, situated only 32 km from Rimini, is the capital of Montefeltro and is characterized by an atmosphere filled not only with beauty and charm, but with peacefulness. The town offers all of this to the unhurried tourist in a historical and artistic setting that is one of the most beautiful in Italy. The rocky pinnacle of S. Leo soars high and lofty above the foothills of the central Italian Apennines, not far inland from the city of Rimini. The town is a cluster of ancient cottages nestled between a magnificent medieval fortress and a prominent watchtower which casts its inquisitive gaze on the wole surrounding territory.
