Anffas was founded in 1958 by parents of people with mental retardation and developmental disabilities. 

The purposes of Anffas are:

* to defend human and social rights of people with mental retardation and developmental disabilities and of their families 

* to promote their general welfare

* to promote national policy which enables individuals with developmental disabilities the opportunity to make choices regarding the quality of their lives and be included in the community.

Anffas has a nationwide organization and works in all major cities by means of local Anffas Associations. It leads studies (prevention, school, work) and organizes conferences. 

Anffas collaborates with state government bodies and local governments by planning and managing welfare services for people with mental retardation and developmental disabilities: sanitary services, social services, re-education and re-abilitation centres, communities…

In Lombardy, Anffas is set out in nearly 40 local Associations. 

Anffas Milan was established in 1966. Since then, the association distinguished itself for an exponential growth. 

It succeeds in serving a lot of people of different ages and conditions, employing professionals: educators, doctors, specialists, consultants, voluntary workers.

At present Anffas Milan controls 9 seats in the city and it offers in collaboration with local governments and several cooperatives many services for mentally disabled people as follows: 

* 3 sanitary centres: 1 re-abilitation centre, 1 family advisory bureau, 1 medical-specialistic centre

* 3 educational centres 

* 1 centre of professional training 

* 7 communities.
