Eolie Islands

Eolie Islands

Diving in the Eolie Islands.
The volcanic origin of the Eolie Islands makes the immersions particularly attractive and the extreme transparency of the water allows easy explorations of the splendid and various reefs. Only in proximity of the active volcanos of Vulcano and of Stromboli, the visibility is compromised by emissions of gas in the superior layers. Particularly impressive and dramatic is the diving to the Sciara del Fuoco (the bed of the river of fire) at Stromboli Island , where the black wall of lava drops toward the bottom of Tirreno Sea, reaching the depth of 3000 m.. On the reefs around the Islands, red corals could be admired, sea stars with five arms, red anemone corals, gorgonian corals, candelabrum-shaped sponges, etc. And besides it is possible to meet banks of Anthias, of saragus, of blue fish and also of groupers, someone having colossal dimensions. In proximity of the small Island of Lisca Bianca, near to Panarea, it is easy to spot the wreck of an English ship. In the last years in the archipelago of the Eolie many archaeological submarine discoveries have taken place.
A 5 mm. wet suit with hood is adequate in all seasons.

How to get to the Eolie Islands.
The main access is from the harbor of Milazzo. From Milazzo harbor many daily runs of hydrofoils to Lipari and the other islands and any lines of ships ferry depart all year. Milazzo may be reached from Messina or from the airport of Catania.
