Diving in Sicily
The small island near Sicily are with no doubt the best place for diving not only in Italy, but in all the Mediterranean Sea. Some of them are marine park so you can find there not only clear water and gorgonian corals but also a lot of fish (see for example Ustica). In general, owing to the transparency of water, the most interesting marine flora and fauna is normally located at more depth than in the case, for example, of tropical seas so that it is quite normal when diving in Sicily to reach -40 and also -50 mtrs (of course less difficult dives are allways possible). Spring and autummn are ideal time to visit and dive in Sicily. In summer the air temperature may be very high (35-45°C/100-120°F) and the hotels very crowded. Diving from shore is not advisable, for safety reasons, from the coasts of Sicily (don't ask me why!). Dive always with a guide of one of the reputed diving centers (see the list in the maps)!
