The Chapel of St.Philip Neri

To the left of the main altar, opens the chapel of the founder of the church. The first stone was set on June 6 in the Jubilee year 1600 by Cardinal Tarugi, a disciple of St. Philip. The chapel was finished in 1602 and the body of the saint was placed under the altar with a solemn ceremony exactly seven years after his death.In 1922, on occasion of the third centenary of the canonization of St.Philip,his body was transferred to a crystal casket.The chapel is reach in marbles and semi-precious stones set in design of great beauty.On the walls of the chapel, are paintings of Pomarancio depicting episodes in the life of the saint. The altar is open in the front to reveal the crystal and gilded bronze casket. A silver mask of peaceful countenance, covers the face of the Saint whose body is clothed in priestly vestments.

 



Over the altar is the portrait of St.Philip by Guido Reni (1575-1642): St. Philip, Martyr of Charity, in vestements of martyrs'red, is kneeling with opened arms in an act of adoration before Our Lady and Child. In the lower left white lilies, a symbol of the Saint.This is a mosaic copy of the original, made to protect the painting from candle smoke. The original is in the private rooms of the saint.
