Mandrake 9.2
Kernel Compile

I first installed Linux in my previous job in 1999. It was a redhat 6.1 boxset complete with manuals. That was the last time I saw a manual from a distribution. I the went onto redhat 6.2 in 2000 which I found on the front of PC Professionalle magazine.
When I got new computer in 2002 things went a bit better. I installed redhat 7.2 and saw for the first a set of software which was nice to work with. I started reaing about how to compile and install software and once tried to set up a Linux From Scratch system. I never have never spent much money on this hobbie so I get all my software form the various periodicals instead of downloading it with a high speed connection. To start off this page I'd like to tell you aout some of the better bits of software I have found in this way.

Mandrake 9.1
This is the only distribution I have seen that have really worked to simplify the installation process on the PC. And the results are obvious. Literally anyone can install this distribution no matter which Microsoft operating system is already on the disk, the istallation program has been realy well thought about. This is a real embassador for linux on the PC. For most people trying out linux the first thing that they see is the installation process. The log of my upgrade from 9.1 to 9.2 can be found at Mandrake 9.2.

Knoppix
This is the first of busybox based distributions which I have tried. It runs directly from the cdrom. It's pity they didn't think about putting an option to install the system onto the hard disk.

Morphix
Morphix picked up where Knoppix left off. The most noticable difference is speed. This distribution is much faster. I got hold of the games version and I love it.

Linux From Scratch
Anyone who is interested in Linux because they enjoy learning about how things work should head straight over to http://www.linuxfromscratch.org. Its a much bigger project than their humble website originally leads you to believe.
