Delta Quadrant

DELTA QUADRANT That quarter of the Milky Way Galaxy appearing to be located between 12 and 3 o'clock if the great plane of the galaxy is viewed as a clockface and the 6 o'clock position bisects the Sol system. Although it was known to be home to the Borg, the Delta Quadrant had been wholly unexplored until word was received in 2374 from the lost U.S.S. Voyager. Compressed messages from the ship, long presumed a casualty, detailed its accidental arrival there and travels homeward among cultures such as the Kazon sects, the Vidiians, Talaxians, Ocampa, the Hirogen, Species 8472 -- and, of course, the Borg.

Captain Kathryn Janewayany the crew of the Starship Voyager are swept 70,000 light-years from home.

In the late 24th century, a renegade group known as the Maquis operate outside the law to right what they see as Federation injustices. After infiltrating a Maquis cell to apprise Starfleet of the group's activities, Lieutenant Tuvok, along with the crew of a ship commanded by the Maquis captain Chakotay, disappear in an area of space known as the Badlands. Tuvok's commanding officer, Captain Janeway, leads a mission to find the Vulcan lieutenant, enlisting the aid of Starfleet prisoner Tom Paris, a former Maquis member, to guide her ship, Voyager, through the Badlands.

Considered a traitor by most of Voyager's crew, Paris strikes up a friendship with Ensign Harry Kim, a naive young Starfleet Academy grad. Kim learns that Paris was drummed out of Starfleet after his piloting error caused the deaths of three officers. The outcast joined the ranks of the Maquis, but was soon arrested by Federation authorities.

After reaching the Badlands, Voyager encounters an inexplicable phenomenon that sends the ship hurtling to the Delta Quadrant, located 70,000 light years from home. The catapult effect kills a number of crewmembers, including the Chief Medical Officer, who is replaced by an emergency medical hologram (EMH) that attends to the wounded. But the EMH has barely begun his work when the entire crew of Voyager is transported to what appears to be a pastoral farm, populated by friendly humans. But it's only an illusion; the farm is actually the interior of the Array, a huge space station, and the residents are holograms. The crew is imprisoned within a strange laboratory facility, alongside the missing Maquis.

After being subjected to a painful examination, the crews of Voyager and the Maquis vessel are returned to their respective ships, docked outside the Array. But two crewpersons are missing: Harry Kim and B'Elanna Torres, the half-Klingon, half-human engineer from the Maquis vessel. Returning to the "farm," Janeway confronts the only remaining inhabitant, an old man playing a banjo. But the man cares nothing about their dilemma and offers them no information about the missing officers.

Noting that the Array is sending energy pulses toward the fifth planet of a neighboring system, Janeway sets course in that direction. Far beneath the surface of that planet, an ailing Kim and Torres regain consciousness in a medical facility. But what they're doing there -- and why -- they have yet to discover.

Starship Voyager™ U.S.S

An Intrepid-class vessel capable of holding 200 crew members, the U.S.S. Voyager NCC-74656 is one of the fastest and most powerful starships in Starfleet. Although at 1130 feet long it is about half the size of the U.S.S. Enterprise NCC-1701-D, the Voyager is more technologically advanced than previous Star Trek vessels. Superbly equipped for exploration and research, the Voyager has an equally impressive array of defensive and offensive weapons, making it ready for action.

Voyager is the second of only four Intrepid-class starships built by Starfleet to date, launched in 2371 on Stardate 48038.5.

On stardate 48307.5, Voyager was pulled over 70,000 light-years from the Badlands area near Deep Space Nine by an extragalactic alien dubbed "Caretaker." The alien had been searching the galaxy for a compatible life-form with which to procreate.

Voyager's assigned first officer Cavitt, helmsman Stadi, chief engineer, and doctor and nurse were killed in the transfer as well as a transporter chief and other crewmembers. Its original short mission did not call for a counselor to be assigned.

Voyager is currently en route from the Delta quadrant to Federation space; at maximum speed, however, the journey may take up to seventy years.

Voyager's folding wing-and-nacelle warp drive system allows the Starship to exceed the warp 5 "speed limit" without polluting the space continuum. Voyager can reach a speed of warp 9.975, but only for short periods.

Its EPS system and back-up have been totally modified to employ Enaran power-conservation technology; power relays on some decks now employ Borg technology. It carried 152 people as of SD 48975.1; Chakotay doesn't believe it can be operated with less than 100. Reference: Caretaker, Part I
