MS is the best choice from my QTH to work new square on 2m band, I run HSCW using 9a4gl software on an old Pentium 133 Mhz. Today to be QRV in MS is easy, all you need is a single Yagi, 100w or more and a PC with sound card. Here you can see IARU region 1 MS procedure. In my hardware section you can find how to build an interface between your PC - soundcard and your transceiver and from COM1 port and transceiver for automatic PTT. It's and universal interface for MS, AGW packet, PSK a.s.o.

ATV is becoming very popular in Italy, it's an easy way to you to learn about microwave circuits. Here below you can see my 23 cm transceiver, ATV QRG in Italy is 1240 MHz, the audio subcarrier is at 6,5 Mhz. My trasmitting part is G4WIM circuit modified, output power is 1,5w after antenna relay. The receiving part is a Philips SF 916 analogue satellite tuner , frequency is loaded into PLL via a PIC16c84 circuit throught I2 bus. As you know a satellite tuner, normally used in an analogue receiver after the LNB, have about 12 dB NF so a preamplifier is needed, I use a single stage with SNA 586 GaAs monolithic amplifier which provides 18 dB gain with 3,5 dB NF. For receiving 10 GHz ATV Repeater, QRG around 10470 MHz, I've modified the D.R.O. of a commercial LNB, normally the frequency of the L.O. is 9,7 GHz, now I've lowered it to 9,4 GHz.
