At the most remote end of the crypt there appeared another less spacious. Its walls had been lined with human remains, piled to the vault overhead, in the fashion of the great catacombs of Paris. Three sides of this interior crypt were still ornamented in this manner. From the fourth side the bones had been thrown down, and lay promiscuously upon the earth, forming at one point a mound of some size. Within the wall thus exposed by the displacing of the bones, we perceived a still interior crypt or recess, in depth about four feet, in width three, in height six or seven. It seemed to have been constructed for no especial use within itself, but formed merely the interval between two of the colossal supports of the roof of the catacombs, and was backed by one of their circumscribing walls of solid granite.
All'estremità' di questa cripta se ne apriva un'altra meno spaziosa. Le sue pareti erano state tappezzate con resti umani, ammucchiati sino alla volta del sotterraneo, secondo l'usanza delle gradi catacombe parigine. Tre lati di questa cripta interna erano ancora ornati in questa guisa. Sulla quarta parete le ossa erano state raschiate via, e giacevano alla rinfusa sul terreno, formando in un punto un mucchio piuttosto alto. Attraverso questo muro così perforato in seguito allo spostamento delle ossa scorgemmo un'altra cripta o recesso ancora più' interno, profondo circa un metro, largo novanta centimetri, alto sei metri all'incirca. Sembrava che non fosse stato costruito per alcuno scopo speciale, ma che costituisse semplicemente un intervallo tra i due colossali sostegni della volta delle catacombe, ed era rafforzato da uno dei loro muri perimetrali in solido granito.
